Fancy starting kick boxing . having problems deciding which type to take up there seems to be loads of variations . Any advice welcome

Kickboxing does indeed cover a lot of styles, from Karate kickboxing, to Savate and chinese kickboxing (Kung Fu).

I believe most people would point you in the direction of Muay Thai

yer i advise muay thai generally more effective but i also like sanshou.

Depends on where you are. In some towns, kickboxing could incorporate muay thai while in others, kickboxing is the "shiny pants" variety.

Boxing - Strikes of punches allowed to the face & body

Kickboxing - Strikes of punches and kicks allowed to the face & body

Low Kick Kickboxing - Kickboxing with Kicks to the legs allowed

K-1 - Low Kick Kickboxing with a one strike clinch

Sanshou - K-1 with throws over hips and body locks allowed

Muaythai - K-1 with unlimited Clinch and unlimited knees (elbows in A class)

I would say Muaythai and Boxing are best suited to MMA... If you do just traditional Muaythai you will lose your footwork... so counteract this by doing boxing, which preaches footwork...

Between the two you get punching power / speed, kicks to legs head and body, knees, clinch, elbows... everything you need really. But Id look at what MMA fighters style you think would suit you best...

I really like Sanshou, but good luck finding a club... Shoney Cater and Cung Le are good examples of how Sanshou works in MMA. Anderson Silva would be a good example of Muaythai in MMA. Chuck Liddel would be an example of a kickboxer.

Yeah everyones summed up the different styles well. I'd say try a couple of differnet classes and see which you enjoy the most.
