Just noticed my shoulder blades stick out quite a bit when i stand straight, is there anyway to get rid of this? it looks stupid.

I'm guessing if I do more back exercises to get muscle they will go away? but not 100% sure

Pretty much sums it up!

I'll do weights for a while I guess, and see how that helps.

I'd have to see what you mean by 'sticking out' but it could be that your have winging of your shoulder blades. This can occur due to lack of muscle control around the back muscles. The shoulder blade and muscles attached play an important part in the stability of the shoulder. In most sports involving gross powerful actions in front of the body such as punching etc the muscles at the front of the body can develop a bias in strength and control to that of the muscles at the back of the body. With time this can cause instability and can in some instances lead to further problems.

I think the main thing you need to be aware of PaulJonno is that having poor shoulder blade control can limit your power, strength and balance. It would be interesting to know your background of what training you've done + what you are doing now. The only other thing I would sya is with scapula (Shoulder blade) control it is equally as important if not more so HOW you perform the exercises as its not a case of strengthening but can be more of a skill set in postural adaptation. If you see a good sports doctor or physio they could help you. Good luck dude!

Well, iv'e only done boxing in the past, and now MMA. not really much weight lifting, and I must admit... in the past my diet has been pretty shit, with my fast metabolism I wasn't really gaining any weight, so thats probably why they stick out LOL.

But now i'm eating more protein/carbs i'm gaining weight, so hopefully ounce I get a bit of muscle on my upper back, they won't stick out as much.

For working the muscles that stabilise your shoulder blades, do barbell rows or dumbells if its new to you. Pull your shoulders back at the start of the movement and then pull the weight into you. When you lower the weight, let it down with your arms, then lower your shoulders a little. That should work that area pretty well.

PaulJono,

If you have a winging scapula it is most likely weak back muscles but is most probably due to weak serratus anterior muscles. The best way to sort this is to do serratus anterior pulses -

Use an adjustable cable machine set to shoulder height

Turn away from the machine with the handle in your hand.

Extend your arm to a straight position

Step forward so that the weight stack moves up ( keep arm straight )

Push your arm forward, like you are reaching for something keeping the arm straight without turning your torso or waist - movement should come from shoulder area.

Do about 3 x 20 reps 2-3 times per week

Hope this helps, if you need any clarification let me know ok.....
