View Full Version : Retribution

Like many people tonight I am absolutely livid about what happened at Phoenix Fights 'Retribution'.
Now where shall I start...
Aptly name it was. Because throwing several hundred bottles and (amongst other things) a pool table from the balcony at an innocent crowd (including children, pregnant women etc) seems like fair retribution for a doctor stopppage due to an early freak/accidental split eye brow ...to a group of churlish morons.
If anyoneone knows anyone responsible for this riot then please turn them in, because they are not fit to walk amongst us as human beings.
I must also say, what the hell were the organisers doing, organising a show with no fewer than seventeen fights, two thousand(?) people in the venue, with zero security staff or cops present? ...especially after the dangers of this (just incase they could not work it out for themselves) had been pointed out to them.
So after over four heavy drinking hours in the venue – not that the time factor in anyway excuses the reprobates that were involed in the riot – it was 11:15PM and only eleven of the seventeen fights had been completed. The venue got trashed beyond belief. What must have been the entire police force of several surrounding towns piled into and around the venue. Phoenix or for that matter any MMA are never likely to be using that venue again. The twelve most highly rated fighters there have all wasted what will total between them several years of training. Newspapers are going to have a field day. Everyone, fighters, spectators, promoters, present or not present that evening will be a loser.
I repeat, will everyone please do all they can to track down, bring to legal justice, and ban from MMA venues, those individuals that were responsible for the indescriminate violence.

sounds disgraceful.
its a real shame, the years of hard work by so many is undone by minutes of stupidity by a few.

if they are in any way linked to a fighter he should be banned from competing for quite some time.

LP, they appeared to be linked to a Stockport club (due to timing of the violence and 'word on the street'). Some people were saying that there was trouble two fights earlier when someone else from Stockport was fighting. Can't be 100% sure this is true though – obviously there could be some confabulation coming from the mouths of 2,000 pissed/shocked onlookers.
UP, nobody there had been employed to throw them out. No sensible individual would voluntarily go up a flight of stairs to throw out a group who are throwing bottles at a machine gun like rate plus tables, chairs and every other item that was on the balcony.
Mal, Rotherham.
HT, yes, that one.
DG, yes, having chucked every other item they possible could off they then collectively managed to pick up, walk round with disscussing their options, and throw a pool table. It ended smashed at the very bottom of the stairs. (Not sure if that was because someone was comming up the stairs for them or if they just were not strong enough to lift it over the built up part of the balcony for a vertical descent.)

This was the most cowardly act i have ever seen, throwing bottles, pool tables and whatever else they could get their hands on over a balcony, i doubt they would have been so tough had they not been stood on a protected balcony!!!! What the cowardly wankers and all that retaliated forgot or had no thought for was the innocent children, pregnant woman, elderly people and general supporters came to watch REAL fighters inside a ring, who actually know how to fight!!! They ruined it for everyone!!!! I could see something was going to start before the actual fight began in the ring, there was beer being thrown from the balcony. The only reason i could see was that the opposition had a large group of support from the crowd. PATHETIC!!! I hope the trouble makers get caught and get banned from on coming events!!!
who is the promoter? They have alot of questions to answer if there was no/insufficient security, sounds like potential penny pinching

There was security present but they got bottlenecked at the top of the stairs and I know a fair few people got bottled it wasnt a pretty site.
When I saw the pool table come flying over the balcony I knew shit was getting deep.
My fighter was just ready to go in as well, what a shit thing to do, those responsible should come forward and the fighters that didnt get to fight on the night should get to fight them if they think they are big shots.

fair enough if that is the case? Was this at the ice rink at Rotherham? Since when does a venue serve glass bottles at an MMA show? I have always been given plastic glasses and this shows the reason why. And by the sounds of it the event was running very late if this happened at 11pm
Also whichever fighters these people were 'supporting' have a responsibility to some degree - don't bring knobheads along to support you.
Did the police turn up? Any arrests made?

Yeah the ice arena mate. It wasnt just glasses it was any object that wasnt glued to the floor to be fair.
The show had 17 fights and it was up to about 11th or 12th fight. Hard to control who turns up to support you to be fair though, I have this problem also, anybody can pay on door and walk in.
Yeah at first one police car lol, then back up came and I think arrests were made.
I hope this all gets sorted as its a real shame that this happened all due to a few bitter fans who snorted a bit to much coke and had a few too many wine gums on the coach on the way.

I'm not the promoter but know him very well and can speak on his behalf. I was the ref and compere There was enough security there for this event I assure you but what the hell can you do against a BIG bunch of idiots who rain everything on the real supporters below. The security were straight in but were overpowered by a large gang of idiots who to be honest, knew exactly what they were doing and probably do it regular. They did throw a pool table over the balcony which stopped the rest of the security getting up the stairs and it was a large table, landing on the stairs blocking the whole area. The promoter & security then diverted the energy in keeping the real fans safe and got them out of the building.
Guys, this is a very serious incident with people in the cells already. I'd rather not give the arseholes the publicity.
Remove the thread for the sake of British mma, I'll be emailing all the promoters to warn against these fans. I feel for the fighters and coaches but to be honest they probably won't get to fight on a show outside of their home town again.

I never cease to be amazed at the 'courage' of the mob.
spot on.
one of the most sickening aspects of human behaviour, the "mob courage".
how cock sure would all those lads involved be had they been on their own?
throwing objects at random people is the lowest of the low.
2 years ago, on fucking christmas eve, we were at a friends house when some cunt threw a rock over the fence for no reason at all, hit my mrs in the eyebrow, lucky it didnt blind her, instead she got 6 stitches and we had 10 hours at the hospital on fucking christmas morning. all because some "hard man" fancied himself.
he wasnt quite so brace when i jumped the fence after him and he was long on his toes.
nothing will ever remove the scar on her brow, and nothing will let me forget her scream and the look on her face with blood pooring down her face. it's still something that unsettles me now.
if only i had 2 minutes with that bloke, no show boating about it, id kill him, plain and simple.
oops, got off track, but my point is, cowards who mob up, fancy themselves in a group or are cowardly enough to throw things at anyone, deserve a good kicking.
NAME AND SHAME.
the fighter they were associated with, the gym they were connected to etc.

I was right next to the rioting morons when the trouble initially kicked off, and the security there did as much as they could. They had literally only just returned from throwing one of the mob out after a fight in which a glass table was smashed on the balcony. When the initial rain of bottles began, and believe me, the sheer amount was overwhelming to all on the floor below, the stockport mob attempted to throw a massive tressle table over the balcony, and this was before the crowd had even moved. Had that landed there would have been some serious damage! It was only by the fact that two security guards ran into the mob and dragged them off it that it didnt get thrown. Those two guys then had to face the mob themselves. I don't think i would have had the balls to do that. They certainly weren't shirking.
Once the barrage increased to furniture and fixtures and fittings and fire extinguishers, the Security did the most sensible thing they could, and that was to try and get all the fans out of the way into a safe area while the police arrived. There were a fair few security, but there was no way they would control that ferocious pack of animals.
Even the police had a hard time rounding these criminals up when they arrived, i personally witnessed one in arm and leg restraints being carried away by four police and he was still going mad.
There was totally no need for it, it ruined what was an awesome show, and it was a disgrace that even some of the fighters were bottled in the fracas.
These thugs weren't fans, they were simply hooligans who were looking for a new venue now the footy is winding down. Unfortunately, as sad as it seems, i hope we never see fighters from that Gym again at a show round here, if it means scum like that turning up.

I think you should get your fact right before making such a damaging comment. Moss side only had around 12 fans there i know because i sold them their tickets. And everyone of them were sat ringside and were nothing atall to do with it. I think what happend was disgusting along with everyone else. I can honestly say it was a scary time for people below and those above who weren't even involved in the violence.
I have no issue with saying I travelled up supporting two of the Stockport fighters, with their families some of which OAPs. I was stood alongside them up top, to the right of where it seemed stem from. It seemed that from the start the banter from down below and up and above grew and grew, then drinks were poured and swearing started, then bottles flying up top and down below, then everyone knows the rest.
We were all just as quick to remove ourselves from up top as quickly and safely as we could. I don't think security can be blamed either, as said before the police had trouble getting things sorted just because of the layout of the venue and barricades going on.
It is a shame when things are ruined by events like these, but I hope this isn't reflected upon the fighters, as if they would want idiots like that being associated with themselves or the gyms they represent.
It's the same as football hooliganism you get the fans who want to go for the support for their teams and then the ones that try to tarnish the name of the team and all fans by acts of abuse such as this.
Let's hope the responsible are being dealt with and we don't see things like that again.

After training in martial arts for 40 years i attended the venue talked about... i was sat down stairs in the front row, people keep trying to pin point the blame to other clubs (im not connected to any organization present) but i will say the people sat around me (all connected to a club near where i live) did get out of hand, and when trouble started in the balcony the lunatic sat by my side picked up a glass bottle and throw it at the balcony above (encouraged by his girlfriend) if it wasn't for the fact that a barrage of glass followed, i would have took this pissed up idiot out my self. Can i just say you know who you are.... hope you are proud.

A friend of mine from Manchester who isn't involved in MMA at all was asking about this show the other day, but this is the first I'd seen.
To paraphrase:
"A guy from the gym I work out at in Sale was fighting in Rotherham the other day. Some people who were there to support him went mental and started a riot. He's gutted as there was nothing he could do, and knows he probably won't be able to fight on shows from now on."
Sounds pretty frightening. It's bad enough when it kicks off anywhere, but people lobbing glass around deserve to have some serious damage done to them.

I know it must be a nightmare for the fighter who has had the blame aimed at his friends. I am sure he wouldnt have wanted any aggro, i hope anyway. However if the show is that long and these dickheads have been drinking from the start, why continue to serve them drinks? I dont know the layout of the venue but surely security could see who were gettin a bit pissed up. The job of security is hard enough without bar staff serving people who are pissed up. There should be at least 1 security member at the bar checking who's buying drink and for who. By law if someone kicks off and causes damage and they are intoxicated on your premises you can be prosecuted. Its a bit of a mess and a nightmare for the sport. Its a shame for the fightwer aswell as now he must be feelin shit even though these so-called fans may not be direct friends of his. Then again i know lads that i wouldnt want to come and watch me as they may 'go-off'. I bet theres a few of us on here that have associates like that, we just manage to segregate aspects of our lives from them. Shit day for MMA, shit day for the fighters and organisers just hope these dickheads stay clear of any events.

Exactly..
Quotes being taken from forum from people who have no idea what went on and put in national newspapers just shows how the media go OTT on everything and grab anything that looks remotely excitable.
Pregnant women and children? Come on what the hell they doing going to an event full of alcohol and violence, like that anyways.
I'm a relative of one of the fighters from Stockport and was ringside when it all kicked off, and I can clarify that bottles were also being thrown up to the balcony aswell as down..after the banter between the two groups went from swearing and drinks poured into objects being thrown.
So what do we ban every single person from Stockport / Manchester MMA clubs and fight factory?
It was mindless acts of violence carried out by idiots who most likely weren't even friends of the fighters involved and as stated friends of friends of friends.. There is no way any decent professional would invite the type of people who would react like that.

Aswell as tansey81 i am also a fighter from the stockport mma group, i enjoyed my first mma fight on the retribution night.
I can understand that people may think that it was our gym that brought the hooligans down, with us and may have had something to do with the riot, but i can honestly and openly assure you that i was nothing to do with the fighters or coaches of our club, all that i ask is that you dont condemn all for the actions of a few, i was also targeted by the brainless thugs, and me, like most had to run for cover and flee the venue, that must surely prove that it wasnt anything planned or orchestrated in anyway. it was nothing more that mindless violence from people on too much charlie.
I beg that anyone who may doubt what im saying would come to our gym (completely anonomously of course) and see what a nice friendly and hardworking atmosphere there is about the place, and im positive you will change your way of thinking about Stockport MMA.
