Setting myself the "20 pull up challenge" (Google it - very famous blog) as of tomorrow for a 6week training. The end result is for a 20 or more max rep set. That means overhand, palm away chin ups without leg movements. I could vary between 9-12 at this time last year but never 20 straight. When I am done, I'll post full length body vid. Currently, I am 112kg with very long arms to hinder me. Anybody else up for this? Might to the 100 push up challenge prog. on alt days training. Participants??! I want to compare myself to other fatties!

my pull up technique is fucking terrible 9-12 is very good for a guy your height n weight. Im 6ft4 and find having longer reach sucks when doin them

i will gladly participate in a 100 push up challenge ( proper push ups ) but as for 20 chins that aint gonna happen for me but could luck in your quest , have you seen those door bar things you can get i have one its excellent you can do all sorts of stuff with it as it has 2 bars its ace( you can do different positions and the lower bar supports your arms so you dont swing about when doing leg raises

feel free to pop round mine sometime to try it out

last time I did it till failure I did like 26 pull ups (6+weeks ago), clean.

Now that im trying to get more mass, I tend to do 12.5kg/15kg weighted pull ups for 3x10.

When i do them i usually do like 3 x 7 overhand then 3 x 7 underhand... trying to work towards 10.

I did try them with a dumbell between my thigh to make it harder, i did around 2 LOL

i cup the dumbbell within my feet alot easier then.

my routine is

3x10 weighted
3x 6-8 wide grip
Back/bicep exercises then finish with:

3x failure inhand grip, I try to focus on the biceps more for this one, then back/shoulders.

U.Punch. I am around 6.6 so for me it was always like u say. Shit lol. Harder to get to the chin because of back and arm ratio. The program works you from your current max rep though. Even taking you through working from 1 upward! Gav, might have a go around yours couple weeks. I pulled a bar down though couple months back from mates house. Hope it is fixed on good! Help define your biceps also though mate lol. I do around 58 good form press ups, without stopping, before collapsing. I will challenge you one weekend.

this is what makes me envious of people under the 100Kg threshold. I'd love to add weight lol. I was inspired because i still have some nagging pains in my lower back so trying to avoid weights and master my body completely. Some of the pull up records are insane. Are plyo pull ups where you leap up and pull into it?

NeilD
07-06-2009, 03:27 PM
plyo pullups can be either clap pullups

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1JqtbRPNps&feature=channel

or switch grip pullups

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKfil5xrtcY

..at least they are the two I've had experience with anyway :) - Don't let your weight put you off there are MANY guys bigger than you who rep out the pullups and horrible variations like the one arm pullup (which I cant do yet lol)

Well, i have an early start tomorrow. I wish the stupid gym had straight bars though instead of fixed spaced handles. We'll see how it goes each monday wed and fri. I'll be doing the press up programme alternate days.

I tried doing it just now and could barely muster 2 pullups cos the pain in my arm from sparring earlier. Unbelievable! I used to be able to do 10 in a row. Im gonna try doing pullups without using my hands, like that George Dillman No hand death touch guy.

muscle ups is where you carry on up and push your arms out straight so you end up with arms straight above the bar , look em up on youtube , they are pretty cool.

I was laughing to myself the other day watching some lad do pull ups whilst I was on a row machine, which faces the pull up bar. He first managed 6 unweighted pull ups with poor form. He then grabbed a 5kg weight and managed two pull ups. He then grabbed a 15kg weight and unsurprisingly managed none. He just hung there making a groaning noise. What made it even more funny was he looked surprised/pissed off about this!

I really wanted to point out that if he cannot do them with 5kg, then 15kg is probably not going to work.......

So, the truth stands that the simple pull up (not chin up!) is the great tester of man (and female pound for pound mods). Sadly, I had the shi*s today so shall start tomorrow with 31 reps of weighted muscle ups...

In shields, you have to learn to pull yourself up over fences to escape the police. Pull yourself over the railings at the beach and pull yourself out of the the financial mess in the dole office. So. I believe you.

Enjoy your sloppy seconds in the park lol. Leigh : what do you think - The weight fluc makes a big difference? Think if i get to 20reps at 112kg, then at my fight weight of 105, I should improve to more reps with less to pull up. Does your strength fluctuate much?

Leigh
09-06-2009, 09:25 PM
Well, I went to the gym today and had a go and I did 20 reasonably comfortably but it wasn't as easy as it has been in the past. My strength goes up if I work it and drops if I stop training it. Guess that's pretty obvious. As I fought last week, I stopped strength training about 6 weeks ago. I don't think I've lost much strength in that time but the movements have to be practised

Yes, if you drop weight, pull ups will definitely be easier. goes without saying. Even if you lose muscle and even if its just a couple of kg. 7kg will make a huge difference

black gerbil1
11-06-2009, 08:36 PM

Lol at you bragging you little bugger. I'm on second installment tomorrow. Did first yesterday because sick on monday. Following the programme, means i do them at intervals and wait a few minutes before going to failure on my last set at he end of each week. Me thinks i'll be at only 9 on the last set. I'm 114 though. Heavier than thought:(

black gerbil1

Well children. I don't know if i'm the sole participant here but i'm in the third week and the increase is going well. I'm not posting any results until 6 weeks are completed but i must say. Damn! Why do people leave this exercise out? What a strength builder! Reps are still very strict. Started at 17st 12 and now 17st 5 with dieting so expect to be popping them out like a machine very soon.

Pretty sure there is a video and Leigh was here to confirm, before my accident I did 30 pull ups wide overhand grip and was then beaten by my little bro who did 31 smiling (cunt).

My routine involved 4x4 wide with 40kg strapped round my waste and 4x6-8 close grip with the same weight. Dumbell rows with 45kg for 20 reps each arm. I was about 12 stone.

I have seen loads of guys who find dips and chins easy and make it look effortless. I was always impressed with Marius doing them on his hl.

I used to love weighted chins when I used to train for big muscles :)

Almost did 10 sets of 10 tonight doing one of the infinite intensity workouts, by the last 3 sets I only managed 8 and 7 and 5 respectively. I reckon I could bang at least 15-20 out as was nowhere near failure til about the 6th set then it was uncomfortable.

Will give it a shot in a few days, mind you I'm pretty light compared to a lot of you so it's nowt special if I can manage it. I'm only 78k.

That's awesome :) I think the programme is the nuts tbh. This morning i did (120secs rest btwn sets) 8,7,8,6,4. I might wait until friday though and do 9.8.7.6 then max. I started doing one pyramid bicep exercise straight after on Monday;s pull ups - I feel stronger on the first set now.

kungfukris
22-07-2009, 06:12 PM
duno where i read it but doing 6, 8, 10, 8, 6, reps is suposed to send your one set max up pretty quick if you are a beginer. i do this as a warmup before i do weighted chins but a few of the bigger guys i train with just do this and had rapid improvements!

ocuana
22-07-2009, 08:32 PM
I don't recall the full formula but it does work out at something like doing sets with a percentage of your max each time. Much like the programme works with pull ups, it also works with other body weight exercises like push ups and dips.
