Cheers mate! I thought you were joking about the dog whisperer stuff but I guess from your response you do actually know your stuff. What the fuck is kibble? I am feeding him on Wainwrights from pets at home now and he doesn't really do it anymore but I just wondered the reason why he did it as a pup. He's good on this wainwrights stuff at the moment but he has lost his appetite due to the heat.
I also have a springer bitch who pisses everywhere when anyone goes to stroke her and acts really nervous. Is there a way to stop this we seem to have tried everything!

Hi Hywel and David.Had allot on my plate lately, drifted away from mma scene a bit. Thanks for kind words re dog stuff, the credit crunch has done for many a pooch, people are just dumping them. The foot chasing thing is playfull dominance mate, id stop it.A good rule is,if a wolf wouldnt do it to the pack leader dont let your dog do it to you. The pissing is a fear response, best tackled by increasing socialisation after exercise and dont fuss her if she does it or get angry just ignore.
Feed raw,my dogs eat for free and have the best diet poss.Raw meaty bones, pigs feet, chicken carcasses and fish guts all for nowt, stinks a bit though.:)

Chicken bones?
Isnt that kind of a no no?
I believe the problem is when they are cooked they can/do become brittle, so could break unnaturually in places you don't want them in your 'dag'. Whereas bones from a red meat aren't associated with these problems.
Mitch, did you introduce your dogs to BARF straight away (I got the impression from earlier threads that the majority are rescue?) or introduce it into a decent kibble at first? Also do you buy it in bulk and freeze it or just as when needed from a butchers etc?
mitch
03-07-2009, 08:41 PM
I switch em as soon as i get em pal but i dont feed any veg matter.Iv got a big freezer as i get fish bits in bulk.Id avoid any cooked bones for reasons youve stated.Feeding raw is just giving dogs what nature intended and the benifits are too many to mention. My akita was 14 when he died,i reckon by not feeding processed food he got an extra 3 to 4 yrs.:)
From another post:
An ex girlfriends mum told me she was sick of her dog after a few years so she drove 10 miles or so away and dumped him on the pavement. 3 weeks later there was a scratching at the door and the dog had found its way 'home'. I just had to walk out of her house after that story.
He went to an animal rescue place in the end and fortunately he was rehomed and loved
Ive heard about people that kick and beat their dogs and the poor things still greet them at the door, wagging their tails, just wanting to be loved.
My dog is now 13, dont know what the f**k i'm gonna be like when he goes

TA jumpin:) My advice is,as soon as your dog stops doing the normal things that makes them happy, its time to say goodbye. If you give a dog a long happy life then I believe you have the right to give them a short pain free death.

Hi Mitch,
Sounds like you are doing a great thing fella. My girlfriend and I have been thinking about getting a dog for a while now but due to us both working full time it just would not be fair, however due to a job change we are now in a place to take a dog on and would be interested!
We have been looking at British Bull dogs (I guess these are rarely abandoned due to their crazy value?) and also Staffordshire BT. If there are any that could be of interest please let me know.
Thanks.

Cool posts Mitch. Sorry to hear bout your Akita mate, I lost my old man about 4 weeks ago (rottie, 10 1/2 years old). When you get a dog people forget that you've got a duty to give em a good life and a dignified end. Just got the one rot now, Murphy 2 1/2.
I work in textiles and often have some old blanket samples etc, if you need any for the dogs? I usually donate em to rottie rescus but could make an exception for the bull breeds as a one off ;) (we get a few American bulldogs coming to our dog club so I'm starting to warm to em)
If you're in Sheffield I can drop em off for you as well as I work there about avery 2 months or so. Just PM me and next time I have a clear out I'll try and set some aside for you. Happy whispering.

Okay; dog whisperer: I got a puppy 2 days ago and she is afraid of EVERYTHING. I got her from a home where some lady had 7 other dogs and the 4 larger dogs were about to kill her while the other small 3 used her as a chew toy. It’s a pup, I don’t know how old she, is but she’s only 4 pounds. She appears afraid of the food bowl. She’s not eating much and the vet can’t see her until next week. I'm not good with animals, didn't grow up with a pet, don't now shit about them. I just wanted to get her outta there. any ideas?

sorry to hear about your boy mitch. i lost my mastiff in april, he had a heart condition he lived with for more than a year before it took its toll. he was 3.
its been a few months now and the idea of a rescue dog seems good. breaks my heart to see so many dogs on re-homing sites, some with terrible backgrounds. i'd take them all if i could! really good to see someone that cares and is willing to put in the time and effort like you are mate. nice one.

Mitch, I'm on my third Akita. This is my first bitch though and my first rescue Akita, too. I've had Amaya for 5 months, she's around 3 and a half.
She's an absolute angel, though secretly I'm still sold on the lads for personality. She's great with people and especially with children, though she's by far the worst I've ever owned for dog aggression. She goes totally berserk so I'm guessing she's had absolutely no socialisation whatsoever but she's a work in progress etc....
I'm still sitting on the fence regarding raw foods/off-the-shelf completes as I had 14 almost trouble-free years out of my last lad, Bodhi who was fed on Eukanuba exclusively. Though I have tried to buy my current girls grub from a more ethically sourced company. She's on a two month rotation of Taste of the Wild-High Prairie and Taste of the Wild-Pacific Stream.

Nice one for saving the little pup.
Hopefully she'll become more comfortable with you and settle down. Taking her to training classes might be a good idea at some point to get her used to other dogs too.

She needs calm and quiet and then gradually re socialising with calm dogs.Youve done a great thing mate just needs patience and remember shes lived in fear of her life at a young age but with the right handling she will forget.Good luck pal im sure youl do a good job.

Shes nice mate.Remember chattin about akitas with you when you fought in donny many moons ago.Akitas are a real primitive breed bud, head strong as you know.Sosialisation is the key mate and being top dog, they need reminding in simple ways like getting them to ask for everything.Akitas can be unpredictable,i reckon its cos there such an ancient breed. All the best matey.

Thanks pal but ive only got a small rescue pack, met this guy out walking who had ten staffy and bull mixes all rescued. There putting staffys down by the thousand each year.My message is dont breed dogs. The guard breeds are being churned out by chavs and baby gs crossing there pittbull with his home boys rottie and swapping the pups for an oz.Its getting out of hand. Then theres the middle class labradoodle brigade with there screaming sprogs in thousand pound buggys who get dogs to match there carpets at a grande a piece.Rant over.Love Norms.

Mate, got staffys comin out of my ears.Just rehomed an irish blue that the guy paid a grand for.Was living its life in a cage, covered in its own shit and they fetched me in cos it was biting everybody wtf, wouldnt you. They couldnt wash it cos it went mental when they brought out the water. Turns out theyd paid 30 quid for a dog trainer to tell them to squirt it in the face with water wen it got out of line.
