I noticed that he kind of sidestepped the issue of the quality of the stream, which is what those of us without Sky care about. That makes me think it's going to be not that great, which sucks for us.
But thanks for stepping up and asking the questions people want asked, Gareth.

Who cares if they spent 8 million? - I doubt they really did.
They would have made millions since they broke into the UK market.
They would have made an extra £50 off me if they put the fucking show on PPV.
BUNCH OF FUCKING CUNTS!

But yeah they've made millions and Dana saying they lost 8 million dollars in the US is ridiculous and a poor excuse because of the money they've made in the UK and europe and will continue to make. I like Dana and I enjoy watching his blogs but that was a stupid thing to say and you would have to be thick to accept that excuse. Think of the money he will rake in when they slap the thing on box office and take an extra £15 a month off each of us.

They might have spent $8 million but thats over all the shows they have done and they have made there money back and some. I like Dana White but what a prick, with leaving it this late they could have put it on ITV and had a massive audience but they are now are probably going to struggle to even get 350,000 like they got TUF9 finale.

Spot on, it's pretty poor to leave it until the last minute as well, leaving many with no option, if it's free why not have it on a terestrial channel like you say, even ITV2 or dave or something would be better because all the millions of potential new viewers with freeview boxes, he seriously has fucked up a big opportunity to build the sport, I've lost respect for him.

Dana White has always been a lucky cunt.
He did not build the UFC - Lorenzo Fertitta did. Dana White is just a slag for the media.
Look what that cunt said about Fedor?
Moral of the story, get sky.
I've got sky but you're missing the point, he bangs on about making the sport grow yet he limits the biggest mma event of all time to people who either have sky or broadband, now that drastically reduces the amount of viewers especially when you give them a couple of days notice, it's not like you can have sky or broadband put in in 2 days is it.
millions of people have freeview boxes and virgin media and he's alienated them and given them no option.

Do you think it's that easy for the UFC to just call up a terrestrial channel and say "whatever shows and advertising you have running for 9 hours on Saturday, get rid of them and put us on!" It's not that simple people. Do you seriously think he would rather have it on a dead racing channel than ITV? Tell me another one. Setanta fucked up and the UFC had to try and pick these pieces up in the run up to the biggest show ever. NOT EASY. UFC 100 is keping them kind of busy you know.

People Knew Setanta was dead in the water weeks ago - The UFC should have had a back up plan.
And the UFC does not need 9 hours - They just need enough time for the live show.
WTF does SKY Sports have on at 3 in the morning? Why can't they show it?

yeah, but he also said they was close to another deal but it didnt come through... so maybe it is easy, and they hung out for some money... considering this is being streamed live online for free, then they could have put it on virgin 1, or channel 5, but they didt, for some reason its gone on some weirdo station, only sky guys can get, tomorrow im looking for a sky dish to put on my wall, and get in the loft and get my old box out..

Well, the fact that they're putting it on for free, shows that they aren't money grabbing. It's obviously the best they could get on short notice.

the whinging is getting beyond a joke now.
people were so fucking spoilt with setanta, now the toys are coming out.
the ufc cannot accomodate everyone, not on such short notice.
most countries in the world only show the events on PPV or paid tv, it's not as though the uk are suffering worse off.
people fucking expecting a major event to be free to tv for them
at the end of the day it is a business, why should they make a massive loss for the sake of some spoilt mma fans who want everything for nothing?
the ufc were given just a few weeks to re-negotiate massive, mega million quid deals, it just wasn't possible, especially when one deal fell through at the last minute. there wasn't the time for them to achieve an ideal situation. no doubt things will be ironed out after this event but for now, on short notice, the ufc have done well. they've given the event a temporary home on sky and provided people the ability to watch online. people expecting them to negotiate massive deals on free to air tv in a few weeks  just ignorance to what that actually entails.
just swallow.

what a bunch of tossers. people moaned when it was on bravo cos of adverts, moaned when it wasnt on bravo, moaned when it went to sentanta cos of the extra subscription, moaned when it wasnt, moaning now its on free on sky, and they would moan if it wasnt
be glad its available. if you cant watch it, do what everyone else did when there was no mma on tv...download it after.
christ there was a time people were happy watching a 3rd generation vhs copy cos thats the only way they could get to watch any shows in the uk. at least now you can get a top quality digital copy a few hours after the show.
and if you moan cos you aint got sky or broadband then your a cheapskate & deserve nothing anyway. now fuck off

I love how some people must have brilliant insider info on the UFC. First off, you know for sure they are making money on UK shows, secondly you know that they left it until last minute to get a TV deal. How? What info do you have to back this up?
lol at people thinking they weren't trying to sort out a TV deal from the moment Setanta went pop.
Like Dana White said, they obviously want to be on the channel which will get most viewers. If they had something in the works and couldn't finalise the deal (maybe Virgin wouldn't guarantee not to cut fights, like they did with the Finale? Maybe VM subscribers should think of that before blaming the UFC) then they had to go with 433 and so decided to also stream it live.

I think Dana has done a great job resolving this issue. Of course they want the biggest platform possible and even if this setup was a plan b, it's a very decent solution.
Once again we are getting it for free which is great. I don't care if some of you would have paid for it on PPV. At 3am in the morning, most people in the UK wouldn't pay for it on PPV so this has to be a far better solution, especially as most viewers will in all likelyhood, sky+ it and watch it back at their leisure on Sunday.

Just fucking lol at the dumb cunts that are telling everyone not to moan - They fucking have SKY and it's easy for them to preach like a bunch of wankers!
Rob T - Their new game sold 750,000 copies within the first couple of days - The UFC is making a lot of money in the UK.
Has there been any adverts about the 'UFC Channel' on SKY yet? Are they giving it a big push?

They sell out every event. I doubt they are making a loss and they fill the card with low paid fighters.

I don't watch TV, I have no idea about advertising.
Yes, I have been to a UFC event. End of the day you have to admit you have no idea whatsoever whether they are making money each event, whether they have broken even on the UK as a whole etc... It's all speculation. Just like every event when the salaries get published and the idiots start up with "I can't believe FIGHTER only got paid $X" etc...
Josh Palmer
10-07-2009, 11:11 AM
They sell out every event. I doubt they are making a loss and they fill the card with low paid fighters.
Yet they offer almost every UK event for free in US which is stripping them of the vast majority of their revenue for the event. The agte at most events means almost nothing compared to PPV.
Have you been to any live UFC events in the UK? I have.
I have been to several events in both the UK and Las Vegas.
They have a big market for DVDs - They are making a lot of money in the UK.
I have only ever bought one UFC DVD (Tito Vs Ken Vendetta) - that was years ago before I knew what torrents were. I also train with alot of different people and I know almost none who actually own any official DVDs.
Answer the question about SKY - Have you seen any adverts for the 'UFC Channel' yet?
I haven't watched any TV since they announced it so I can't say.

i dont think you can personally blame dana white for this
setanta went under, they were left scrambling for a broadcast partner
they then have to negotiate with x amount of potential broadcasters
its not a case pf phoning ITV and saying "put this on your channel on staurday night " and ITV going "oh yes mr white, thank you sir"
First of all, ITV wouldnt want it for their mainstream channel and ITV4 has no money, which is why cage gladiator broadcasts went by the wayside
with the other channels they spoke to, obviously the price has to be right and also the timing - perhaps certain channels already had programming scheduled and couldnt change that at late notice without breaching exisiting contractual obligations?
as for the money, just because its short notice they cant bend over a barrel and pull their pants down. Once you give something away or charge a low price for it, it becomes difficult to raise your price afterwards. Were they supposed to devalue the price of their product for the sake of one event?
from what i know there have been hours and hours of complex and torturous negotiations trying to get UFC 100 on UK tv; the amount of people bleating as if dana white or ufc execs have personally and deliberately set out to put the show on the racing channel is ridiculous. Setanta crashed and it was a late notice fuck-up that left them scrambling; I'm surprised they actually got it onto a UK broadcaster at all.
oh and, they lost a fortune on at least the first three big uk shows, thanks to poor dollar-to-sterling exchange rates, relatively low PPV sales in the US thanks to weird broadcast times, and high marketing costs. UFC 70 in manchester, the entire city was wallpapered with UFC posters, plus ads in all the mags and papers etc. I know people love UFC bashing and I am no apologist, but cut them some slack, its not a big conspiracy against everyone!
John@FightersOnly

they might have a capacity crowd at events, but that is not the same thing as selling out. There are several thousdand comp tickets given out sometimes.

certainly will have made money but there's a split to be made with THQ, plus marketing fees, shipping, pressing, printing... that video game revenue may not have found its way back to the ufc from the retail stream yet and even if it has, it may not be immediately accessible liquid assets depending on the structure of the company.
but even if they made £300 million truckloads of cash - whats that got to do with broadcasting ufc 100 in the uk?

Do you think the UFC is making a loss on live events in the UK?
i dont have the facts available to comment on recent shows, but i know they took a big hit on the first few.
but as someone said above, PPV sales are what drives the UFC revenues for the most part so when that revenue stream is inactive for a UK show, it certainly hammers their turnover for that event.
The UFC is approaching the UK and Europe as a long-term project though, so the shows up till now could all be loss-leaders, who knows? As you said, sales of the gam are through the roof so maybe they recoup any losses there.

From what I've seen in the shops and at live events I do not think they are making a loss in the UK - I will be 110% sure they won't be making a loss if they sign with ESPN.
Again, can you give us any figures to back up these claims?
You are making statements without any foundation.

You want me to break everything down - That will take sometime. I will give it a go.
I have a question - Does anyone know if the new ESPN Channel will be HD?

I'm just pissed off. If any of you read that thread on MMA.TV you will see that I'm not a not fan. I've been following the UFC since 1999. Not being able to watch it on TV has been a hard pill to take.
you said before you didnt like torrent sites
if youve been following since 1999 how on earth did you watch the older events? did you get it on tv then?
you really are a prick. at least if you are going to keep on then try & make some sense

It's not speculation.
They have sold out every event.
Their new game sold 750,000 copies within the first couple of days.
Major stores on the high street carry their DVDs.
Pretty sure 95 wasnt sold out.....lots of empty seats by me. Loads up on the upper level too.
