For about the last year , 18 months I have concentrated on Gi training only classes. On a Friday morning I do a session 1 on 1 with one of the higher belts. Today we went back to No Gi. Got to say I enjoyed it , it was quicker , flowed better ... just cool as.
Does anyone else have a preference ? After this morning I think I prefer No Gi training. Far more fluid....
just interested on other people thoughts on the difference between the 2

Everyone has phases. I had 4 months without wearing a Gi at the start of the year. Now I'm back to doing more Gi work and I've remembered I do enjoy it as much as no-gi, just took me awhile to get back into it.

I prefer training in the gi, it's more fun, there is more stuff you can do and it's harder technically (i.e. mount escape with the gi on is much harder, especially to not give up a sub at the same time).
I love rolling nogi as well though.

I love training with the gi, I much prefer the greater variety of available techniques.
However when I take the gi off once in a while I find it a very refreshing change and it is an important part of BJJ to remain experienced without the gi.
It doesn't take long for me to want to put a gi back on though, that should always be the core of a long term grappling program in my opinion.

No gi in summer and Gi in the winter (I feel the cold)
I love both, both are different but the same (does that make any sense!!!)

I found the pace surprisingly quick without the Gi , i forgot how much the Gi does stifle your movement. It was quite refreshing as Tribulus mentioned.

I agree but I also like the control and better technique whilst wearing the Gi. There is little chance to power out of a submission when you got a Gi on (much, much harder anyway). Nice and warm too!!

I have always been an advocate of NoGi..but i now have the oppurtunity to train in the gi, i am seriously considering it..
But im not silly, i have my humble pie baked and ready to eat as i know that i will definately have my ass handed to me..:)

i prefer no gi, although i really like both. At the end of the day i just love grappling in general. If you throw a gi jacket and shorts on me i would love sambo, freestyle wresting, judo etc etc. They are both BJJ, enjoy both mate

I love my Gi to bits, I enjoy nogi but will choose the gi everytime.
Problem is I feel lost during standup without the gi

You need to do both.Gi is more important and takes longer to learn so more sessions per week should be Gi.
However,No Gi is a very, very important part of Jiu Jitsu and should be trained at least once per week.
Training in both Gi and No Gi will make you better at Jiu Jitsu than only training one discipline.
While teaching a Gi class i always make the Carlson students take their Gi's off for a couple of rounds so the guys that never turn up to the No Gi class
are forced to learn No Gi as well.
The next step will be turning up to the MMA class with a load of old Gi's and making all the 'cage fighters' put on a kit for a couple of rounds LOL!

Was only training no gi, for a couple of years, mma, but lately just BJJ and Im loving it, I didnt realise how much I missed rolling with the Gi, Its nice to compete without worrying about strikes. Gotta keep reminding myself to loosen up when on my back and not to tie up so I dont get hit.
