Guy's

Been looking at www.gracieuniversity.com

Basically, you sign up pay for loads of instructional videos, film yourself doing the techniques, email any questions you may have. Then when you feel ready, you send the footage of yourself to the site and get graded.

Is this right?

What are your thoughts regarding this?

I am concerned that the skill level of anyone training in this way will be much lower than some one training the old fashioned way (by going to a class).

I personally have been training in BJJ for nearly 5 years. I can demonstrate loads of techniques that I can't pull off in live sparring against a skilled resisting opponent.

Not saying online training is good or bad (yet) just wondered what everyone else thinks?

I think it's bullshit and just being done to make money.

I know people defend it by saying "It allows jiu-jitsu to reach everyone"... first off, BJJ has already spread to a lot of places and physically training with a proper instructor would be much more preferable. Secondly, getting jiu-jitsu to reach everyone should be secondary to maintaining standards imo. If someone has no instructor nearby, they either need to travel or wait.

BJJ is more than just a set of techniques, it is a method of training and obviously the live rolling plays a hugely important role.

That said, the videos that Gracie Academy put out are a high standard and I'm sure people who are having proper BJJ instruction elsewhere would be able to learn from them.

Just sent you a PM mate as I used to live on the island and know a few people who might be able to help you out. Remember you also have Portsmouth on your doorstep, 15 mins by Cat.

Cheers

A grades a grade imo as long as you can hang with others the same grade what does it matter how you got it?
