Oh thank God there's gonna be an intermediate category...

The jump from novice under 1 year to advanced - anyone over 1 year was huge!

yes, given enough in each division:
beginners 1 yr and under
intermediate 3yrs and under
advanced over 3 yrs

(any previous winners of the beginners division must compete in the intermediate division)

how can they tell how long you've been trianing could a guy who's been training like 15 months enter and get away with it?

We'd hope that people aren't sad enough to try and sandbag and win. That said, we have had Sandbaggers before (A purple belt in the beginners) and when questioned on it in his first match he admitted it and left the competition. They aren't too difficult to spot :)

good to see that people are questioned i hate people that do that, they are simply cowards that are scared to fight people of a similar ability, especially when someone has been training for like 3 months enters then faces a purple belt and is completely destroyed its a bad experience. i remeber fighting a kickboxing match in supposed beginners purple belt freestyle karate, i was a white belt, but had done kickboxing before, and the guy was actually a black belt posing as a purple so he didn't have to fight in the brown/black belt division as some national black belts were in it, so he decided to cheat yet he still lost :D

Don't worry levo will be shouting "SANDBAGGER" at the slightest sign of anyone fighting in the wrong category.

Can I request you have a program showing what weights on which mats and in which order if possible? It worked really well at the grapplemania comp, allows you to only watch one mat rather than trying to look for similar sized guys getting ready to fight incase it's your weight.

And while I'm at a PA system would be handy as well.

Weights pre-planned on each mat, probably not. We like to turn around the rounds as soon as possible, we give each mat a weight division to get on with, then another one for them to do next... after that it' s a case of who's completed first, get the next one on and keep it moving as quick as possible. I agree it did work well, but it did slow the day down. We appreciate that people travel long distances to get involved, so we like to try and get it all done as soon as we possibly can.

PA System announcing 15 minutes before it starts on what mat might be a good way to go with numbered mats too. Maybe a white board with each weight division on and as soon as the division is assigned a mat it will be written on it so everyone knows in plenty of time.

Agree with some of that on grapplemania, in that they could've moved some of the later bouts onto the empty mats to speed it up, so maybe plan first few bouts then take it from there? Like the white board idea, and the acoustics are poor in that hall so think a PA system is a must. The more info that is displayed the less badgering officials will get asking "what mat, when, is that novice, intermediate advanced?"

I entered the last ground control comp in Manchester a few months ago and really enjoyed it. The event was really well organised & ran smoothly. This was my first ever competition & as a 37 year old mum of two I was pretty proud of myself for having a go....got my arse kicked twice but hey, its the taking part!!! :D My only issue was that very few girls entered the comp so I was matched with girls much more experienced than me but it's all part of learning & I definately know where I need to improve! The next one falls on the same day as Sherlock's MMA show at IKON in Bolton so I'm gonna have a busy day....grappling all afternoon & watching some MMA pro & semi pro bouts in the evening :D

Hey Posi you should definately do this next comp. Its great experience & good to put those techniques we drill week in week out to the test! Once I'd put my name down I trained differently too, having something to actually train for instead of just for fitness (for me anyway) gave me a whole new outlook on my training....the beers & chinese buffet afterwards was a pretty good incentive too! lol Although might have to bypass chinatown this time as we'll all be at the MMA show in Bolton that night :D

good event today, could of ran a bit smoother especially with the start time.

im glad our guys got there first taste of competitive grappling. made up for all of them, no medals but everyone will learn something. think we went 6-4 throughout the day with 4 lads on the mats, all training 2,6,6,8 months so well done lads. a few sandbaggers in the beginners divisions.

Couple of ideas:

PA System

boards on the mats for what division is on at that mate.

possible "match card" showing the order of each division on each mat.

more than one person on a table, one to score the match and a time keeper. could of times points were missed due to checking the time or something else.

All in all a great day as usual by the Next Gen / Ground Control team.

Well done boys

Manik

pa system and boards showing which division is on, and possibly next are good ideas. The order of each division might not work because of constantly adjusting matches to avoid teamates fighting each other

Thanks for running another great event guys.

Took 5 lads up. Liam and Ranj took silver and bronze in the -73kg advanced division, Jacob won 3 fights in the -73kg intermediate division and got bronze. Daywalker won 2 fights in -68kg before losing by 2 points in the last 10 seconds of his bout with the fighter who won the category. Henley won one fight by armbar and lost one on points in the junior division. Am very happy with their performance, especially as a couple stepped up in to more challenging divisions even though they could've stayed down according to the rules.

Agree with all Widge's suggestions (probably because we discussed it on the day):

- PA system
- Boards to show which divisions are on which mats
- Two people to do time and scores.

Shame on all the blatant sandbaggers hiding in the novice and intermediate divisions.

Why do people sandbag? Its just stupid.

Surely the medal you win doesnt mean shit if you know your more skilled your opponents.

thanks for the input guys, we will restructure for the next event 100%

thanks to all who helped out.

agree with levo, i do think there was some sandbagging going on. And this is going to be one of the hardest things to stop, and a shame that people do this.

its where guys with lot of exp, lie about here skills so to compete with the true beginners,

i loved it, all tho i warmed up at 11 but didnt get to start till 5, waiting times where my biggest problem apart from that i loved it, i won my first fight but lost my second, cant wait for the next one

Levo

Sorry guys but whats sandbagging? Iv heard tea bagging lol but not sandbagging?

It's basically people fighting in divisions below their experience level.

In BJJ people are sometimes held back on belts so they can keep winning their belt division (others just make sure they don't get graded so they are much more experienced). In no-gi it tends to be people interpreting the rules in their favour, such as having experience in other grappling arts (like 5 to 10 years in Judo or wrestling) saying they've only been doing BJJ for a few months and going against far less experienced competition. Or it's guys who've won one experience division trying to do it again instead of stepping up. Things like that.

Sometimes it's debatable where someone should be. But if they smash everyone in their division and act like they did something great when there was a division above that they really should've been in but avoided that really annoys me.

Just part of the sport though.

Nathan

PS Congrats again to the Ground Control team on what is the best no-gi comp in the UK. Highly recommended!

There are 2 people I can think of who took gold yesterday who were blatant sandbaggers. One of our guys went up against one of them in the Intermediate category and when stepping off the mat said "He's been training about 5 years, he was subbing judo black belts when he first started judo and used to wrestle for a couple years..." and you could see it (they used to train judo together at Uni last year).

But no harm done - kowing that you're sandbagging is bad enough. Cheating yourself more than anything.

Great competition... best competition I've ever done and I stand by that. Ground Control gets better and better with every event that they run.

Have to agree with the above comments Levo has made, especially with experience in other grappling arts. This is a submission grappling event- does not mean you have had to have trained BJJ/Submission!! if you are a judo black belt you should do advanced. if you have wrestled for 10 years you should do advanced.
I was a referee yesterday but i also weighed in 50% of the fighters. Some of the shit people were coming out with was unbelievable. Guys with some serious cauliflower ears saying "11 months" mmmm just in the beginner category hey?? also, "errr i have trained for 4 years- BUT i was injured for probabaly 1 year total, spent some time of the mat when i worked away, i got smashed 2 times in the last comp in leeds so i dont wanna go through that again! can i just go in intermediate???"

Just wanna also point out some serious knobhead coaches on the sidelines shouting abuse at referrees. Read the rules guys, and for heavens sake if you are going to shout abuse at least know what you are talking about.

I got knocked out in the same category by some douche who bumrushed me the second we slapped hands instead of having a bit of respect and stepping back.
He basically got mount and sat there for 4+ minutes. Didnt try for a submission, just clamped on the mount. Didnt seem like a grappler to me, if he wanted to just sit down he should have just stayed at home.

well run competition though. some good matches.

no one says you have to touch hands, and at intermediate you should be able to escape mount on someone you say didn't seem like a grappler within 4+ minutes.

What i meant was, holding mount and not trying for a submission doesnt seem like grappling to me.
Like, he was good, he obviously knew what was up. I suppose im more annoyed at being bumrushed the second we slapped hands. thats just cheap.

Its pretty easy to hold mount if youre not trying to sub or punch a guy, which is what he did. He beat me fair and square ive no quams with that, just a bit scabby putting your hand out before the match and pouncing.

Anyone know who won the 98kg+ inter/advanced category. I lost my two fights and had to get off.

Didnt see the outcome. I hope Saif did well as he was one of the guys that beat me!

Saif Khan won as no one else would fight him after he won his first match??

I wonder if that will change because down the road in Stoke on the same day the UMA are running a no-gi grappling competition.

I had a totally spot on time. First bit of competition I've ever had. Only been training about once a week for 8 months (weak I know) but I came out with a loss on points and then a win by triangle in the -87k beginners.

I thought I was gonna end up in the -80 too cuz Im a scrawny get so I thought I did pretty well considerin most of the guys seemed pretty big compared to me.

Really good to finally get a bit of experience behind me, absolutely lookin forward to the next one!

Good jobs fellas.
