Rickson has retired and hasn't fought in BJJ or MMA for a long time!

Rickson was one of the best in his day, and Maia is also one of the best now. Pointless making comparisons because of how quickly the sport is developing.

I'm sure Maia would beat Renzo in BJJ or MMA though, seeing as Renzo is more current I feel a comparison can be made.

I think Rickson would beat Maia in No Gi, Gi and MMA.....

I've heard too many stories even quite recently of BJJ Black Belts/champions training with Rickson and getting destroyed by him....

Off the top of my head - Paolo Filho and Andre Galvao are two examples...

Filho : "I have trained with all of the best fighters from Carlson Gracie team -they were all tough and I wouldn't want to diminish how tough they are, but no one has EVER done to me what Rickson has done recently in training"

Galvao : "He just fucking killed me man, just killed me...."

I do think Maia would beat Renzo though....

Alway's makes me laugh when Rickson is put above everyone else on the planet.

On what basis can you draw that conclusion.

There is a friend of a friend who's cousin once saw someone who said that they're brother rolled with Rickson and he was absolutley amazing.

I think Bruce Lee would beat everyone that ever lived or will ever live!

I think Demian and Rickson trained together recently, I am not sure if he is one to roll and tell, but perhaps someone has some feedback on their training sessions?

I think I would much rather take the informed opinions of GREATS like Fabio Gurgel, Galvao, Filho, Marcelo and so on regarding Ricksons grappling prowess over some uninformed person who thinks that just because Rickson doesnt compete means that his bjj must naturally suck!

I don't think Rickson would fair well against any decent MMA fighter these days. He never fought tough MMA guys even in his day.

However, in BJJ just look at what everyone says about him (as people have posted). If you have a recent world champion (Galvao, 2007) saying he couldn't do anything against Rickson, that has to count for something. Galvao is not the same team so has no reason to talk Rickson up. He said he did sparring from mount with Rickson... when Galvao started in mount he said Rickson escaped every time, when Rickson started in mount he tapped Galvao every time.

Now, whether that means he would win in competition I don't know. People would have a game plan which I can guarantee would be based around working the stand-up for a long time and trying to gas him.

No doubt though, he must be absolutely fucking awesome.

Not saying Rickson isn't great, I'm sure he is.

But no one is unbeatable.

From an MMA point of view, I don't thinks he stacks up so well against some of today's fighters. For that matter DM doesn't either.

Rickson gracie has been one of the major icons of MMA and bjj,I can personally say he has performed the most impressive uses of the human body Ive seen in MMA to date.I dont think at this stage that he would be able to compete with the mma guys of today due to his age.But one things for sure man is that he is a serious legend and yes Ive heard about guys rolling with him and walking out of that dojo going holy shit what just happend.I think he would take Damien.

I have been uploading a lot of old Rickson
footage to my Youtube channel. Here is
some rare footage of Rickson sparring
No-Gi.

Here's a link. I tried to embed the video
but it didn't work.

I don't know why its hard to believe someone who's naturally athletic and has lived, fought and was ultimately bred for the sport is amazing at it.

Yes things evolve, resources get better etc. But for a moment he was the best grappler who walked the earth. Even despite his age he still might be.

I respect that.

Not many old school MMA fighters could stand up and beat today's top fighters. Doesn't mean I still don't think they rock.

I'm sure when Fedor, BJ Penn, Bisping etc are in their 50's their accomplishments will be diminished in some internet forum too.

lol so funny :)

One thing for sure, I don't think many, if any, can make Rickson tap. My understanding of how he approaches the game (from watching him on YouTube and from quotes and interviews).

Whether he would make Maia tap. It's is very F'&#ing possible. Galvao is the most recent example.

But most importantly IMO is that he can't be tapped. His defensive approach is too good.

Henry Akins talks about this in the fightworks podcast episode 198 (52 minutes in if anyone is interested). He says that (without naming names) one of the pan am champions from when they were held in Hawaii got taken apart by Rickson. Apparently he tapped him a couple of times-one time just from the amount of pressure he put on in side control!
Not sure I buy the side control bit, but I'm sure there's some truth in it.
