Was invited over by my good friend and long term grappling colleague Darren Sherlock this evening to take the senior MMA class; a good turn out greeted my good self and we quickly got into the swing of things with a number of grappling drills and the infamous Deadly Knees, courtesy of the Wolfslair, which the students embraced with, well, bendy knees!

Thoroughly warmed up, we carried on with single leg pick up drills and went from the pick up to the takedown and an old school knee compression submission, which involves triangling the legs over the thigh, with the hands in rear naked choke position behind the knee, a submission gleaned from my days at Atherton Submission Wrestling Club many moons ago, a heads up to Darren Morris and Jack Mountford for that one.

A few defences to the single leg were thrown in, including a nifty takedown to leg lock position and a few pointers on when the takedown has been achieved, how not to lose the advantage and have guard pulled on you, how and where to apply pressure in the right places.

Keeping it focussed on leg attacks, the session ended with another old school knee compression submission, for the old school among you, the Scorpion Toe Hold, with extra details to give the submission added sting; from there the last technique was a counter to this seemingly unstoppable submission, which culminates in an arm bar for the unlucky Toe Hold applier.

All too soon the session came to an end and some essential stretching finished the session, designed to help everyone with general guard flexibility and if applied on a regular basis, increased success with the flamboyant gogoplata and rubber guard that seems to be in vogue of late.

Big shout out to Darren for bringing me over and to all the students who worked hard and listened harder and all had a great time - I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Lol Diane, it's a really nice place, boxing ring, cage and matted area and wall cladding, a lot's been invested in the place and all the students were really good people, no egos etc, was a pleasure to teach :)

Of course they're really good people, if they're from Salford! Obviously i'm bias being a Salford girl hahaha.... I don't think I'd last long there though before some rules got broken, don't think most of the people I train with could follow all those rules either. lol.

Hahaha, ok we have a LOT of rules, mostly for legalities/insurance or for the kids to teach them respect etc. but really a lot of them are just formality. For example most people just call me Darren, not master or sir etc... so don't think I've a stick up mi arse! lol

It's really relaxed at the club but looking at them again myself it looks like being at a boarding school lol. On a serious note as prof martial artists though I do believe it's important to lead by example especially with kids, ie. being a positive role model, not swearing in front of them etc. especially when Joe public thinks MMA fighters are all thugs (ok some of us are... )

Thanks Carl, was great to have you down tonight, everyone really enjoyed it and hopefully we'll get you back again soon. It's been a long time and I was particularly impressed when you reminded me of that last leg lock as I hadn't done it for about 7 years! not drilled it and forgot all about it, so will make sure to drill it from now on as it bloody hurt! Nice1

Darren

It was nice to go back to the old school (and not be in Maximes ;) ) and go through some back in the day techniques that many young bloods might not be aware of :D

Darren, what you weighing now? It doesn't seem too long that you were 100kg+ ripped to bits! Understandable though if you're focusing on other things, you've nothing to prove in bodybuilding.

I'm down to 79kg from 112!
Just started back on weights after surgery for torn bicep/tendon but not looking to add size, just functional muscle back. Much fitter than I was though, I used to gas going up the stairs to the gym even tho I looked the part lol.

The blonde chick is my wife :D

Fair point on my logo, it uses sofachrome font which is the same font as the one from UFC, loads of people use it but the use of the big F for both words is original design and you won't find it on any UFC logos.

Thats just the club name though, Salford MMA has another logo that is totally different (1/2 way down my homepage).

I think I need to update my avatar too! to the leaner me...

23) Late arrivals should enter the club quietly, change as quickly as possible and then kneel at the front side of the class, where they can clearly be seen by the Instructor. They must then await instruction and then bow deeply before proceeding to a position appropriate to their grade.

my knees would be absolutely fucked after a week; I have got no concept of time at all
