i'm sure if the UFC put a show on in Scotland, they would fast track some local fighters in to sell tickets... oh and of course some yank fighter will do a "Scotish roots" thing like Marcus Davie did for Ireland....

I think Marcus could cover Scotland and Wales too actually.

Think James or Paul will be first to fight in WEC as they are midgets.
John Quinn and James Jarvie have the greatest potential too, IMO

No one has as of yet!
Maybe of the current crop, Jarvie at LW
I honestly think the UFC would need to come to Scotland for us to see any Scottish boys in the UFC anytime soon!

I hear its really difficult to get into the WEC at the moment, did Brad Pickett fail to get matched over there? I aint sure???
And English guys such as Ronnie Mann will probs be striving to reach the WEC shortly too.

yeah I would agree, I think Scotland is probably a good few years behind english MMA so possibly in the short to medium term we wont see anything but who knows in the future, UFC 143 in the SECC or Braehead Arena.

Be Awesome ehh!
There has been rumors for years regarding the UFC holding a show in scotland, but as dana White says in the past, there is a real problem regarding venues in Scotland, that would hold approx 20,000!
I personally think the likes of the Americans and Brazilians are a few years ahead of us and in general the Brits in terms of Wrestling and Groundwork.
There are some high level mma players in this country, who in my opinion will turn out to be awesome coaches, and probably already are to be honest, as they seem to live the sport.
I would hope guys like James Doolan among others stay in the sport after they finish (long way away) but the experience and wealth of knowledge they have, can hopefully help guys from scotland make the leap in the future :)

this seems to be a large problem in most sport in Scotland, as soon as they retire or quit, they either hit the booze or turn their back on the sport. Theres not enough former footballers, boxers etc returning to the sport in a coaching capacity, from my time involved in boxing, a large majority of the coaches are either in penisonable age or very close to it with very very few younger coaches coming through!

Do you guys remember when the UFC brought Tom Egan to fight on the dublin card against John Hathaway?
Serious mismatch. The same would happen in Scotland.

You guys south of the border flying around in jetpacks now or something?
Scotland is just a very small country, naturally there will be less talent to choose from.

i think scottish mma is strong and there is a lot of really technical fighters. anytime scottish fighters fight in england we always get the underdog role n counted out. i love the look on some peoples faces after the fights finished.

UFC fighters by coutry:
USA obviously has the most. 435 Americans have fought in the UFC.
Brazil is a distant second at 65.
England is in fifth with 21.
Other European countries and the number of fighters they have had in the UFC:
7 - Russia, France
6 - Holland
2 - Belarus, Croatia, Northern Ireland, Sweden, Italy, Germany
1 - Finland, Latvia, Denmark, Bulgaria, Poland, Ireland, Bosnia&Herzegovina
(obviously some fighters it can be debated on which country they represent. Some you could make arguments for 2 or 3 countries. I just picked what I thought was the best one. And for those wondering, I did not just figure this out right now for this thread. I have kept track of this stat for years)

nice post, are fight nights etc included in the numbers?
Nah they are all too pissed to fight at that level, not enough blood in their alcohol stream.

Royce Gracie was the first.
Ha!! An astute observation Sir! Indeed, was it Helio's grandfather that came from Scotland originally?
I would like to see more Scots coming through the ranks. Plenty of fighters there. Never hard to find a fight in Glasgow! :D My Grandfather worked on the shipyards in Glasgow, came from the Gorbles and he refers to the razor-slashings on his face as his "Birth marks".... Don't make them like that anymore !! HA!!

Yep, Everything. All 132 (or whatever it is) events under the UFC banned.

Yep dude, there is a combined Thai/MMA show at Oran Mor (corner of Great Western Road and Byres Road) on the 13th

based on my perception and experience that there were more mma gyms opening up in north of england than in scotland untill the past 3-4 years.

What the hell does that have to do with the STANDARD and QUALITY of the Scottish fighters?

that's fair enough, if you're talking commercially - but if you're talking about the standard of fighters produced then it means nothing at all.
imo the best two bantam weights in the uk both train and live in scotland.
some of the best guys in some other divisions are probably from scotland also.
considering the england gym/scotland gym ratio, that would actually suggest that english mma is not ahead in terms of quality whatsoever - infact if you isolate bantam weight, they would appear to be struggling to keep up.

who mentioned anything to do with standard or quality? I was talking about the general mma infrastructure nothing to do with fighters. I was talking from the point of view that origonally we had less coaches, less clubs and less shows on until the past few years when the scene has started to grow rapidly. My first MMA club was in a dance studio, no ring, no cage, no mats one coach. My 2nd club was in an old church hall with some crash mats on the floor and proped up against the wall.
Now look at the facilities we are starting to get, dedicated MMA clubs and coaches from different backrounds starting to become involved. In my own personal opinion (which you dont have to agree with btw) England was starting to receive these things a couple years before Scotland was.
