When your sparring with smaller people is it fair to ask them not to use their flexibility and speed?

Personally I cannot stand it when I am sparring and some smaller dude pulls some funky hip / leverage movement that I could never do.

Of course the only solution is to simply throw them to the side/ stack them up and get into side mount and smother them with your chest hair. Although this is the moral victory, I cannot help feel that the other guy is missing the point.

However, if they simply slowed down and didn't move quite so much (and possibly eat more pies) it would be more fair.

As a small dude who is flexible but has zero speed/strength, i would say just do what most big dudes do,

get pissed and use strength lol

Or...you could stop bitching about how these guys are better than you and learn from the experience!

Sparring with people of all shapes and sizes, different attributes such as flexibility, speed and stregnth will prepare for for when you have to fight people who have those attributes and know how to use them.

What are you gonna do in the absolute if someones stronger than you or faster? Ask them to slow down or ease up???

See how that one works out.

TheJuice, I think you may have missed the real point of thread?

I agree with what I assume Godders point to be; that people always say big guys shouldn't use strength but no-one ever tells small guys to slow down.

I always tell people to try not to rely on any natural attribute and work on solid, basic technique. Everytime you spar 100% though, use it all.

I like it when small guys are quick and cause me problems cos when I roll with someone my own size again they seem slow by comparison.

lol@ thejuice

I've seen threads moaning about bigger guys for years. I thought id turn it around to prove a point. Thankfully Rob and co seen through my cunning ploy :p

Its like saying to someone stop being lanky or having mad cardio.

I do agree though that anyone that tries to power their way through are a) missing the point and b) in trouble when they get tired.

I am slowly learning that by using my strength I'm doing myself no favours whatsoever. Sometimes though instinct kicks in.

Just tonight I was sparring with a smaller but more experienced guy and he was really taking it to me.

I tried to just focus on the very limited techniques I have, but he just wasn't giving me any time to think (and nor should he). After being armbarred for about the fifth time I just slammed him to the matt, took side control and squeezed him till he tapped.

There was no technique involved in what I did, and I learnt nothing from the experience. I just let my frustration and ego get the better of me.

I'm a little annoyed at myself to be honest. He was a two stripe white belt so it's not like he was vastly experienced himself, but he certainly had more moves than me.

I had at least two stone on him so it wasn't too difficult to overpower him, but I let myself down because I know that I probably couldn't have done the same to someone nearer my own weight. So I learnt nothing in terms of technique from the roll.

Ah well, tomorrow is another day.:)

I think their should be a big guy support/pride group in BJJ. We get ragged on constantly, immediately assumed we don't have technique and spoken about as if we are the very anti-thesis of BJJ. "BJJ was made for small people, fuck off big guy!"

Fuck up or i'll lay on your ribs for a while!

Speed and flexability is all I have!

I'm always telling the bigger fellas NOT to try too hard to hold back their strength, in the big bad real world there are lots and lots of people much bigger and stronger than me, so from a self defence point of view the big guys taking it too easy on you is doing nobody any favours.

In the same way I'm gonna use my speed and mobility to as much of an advantage as I can (to cover up for my lack of technical ability!)

I don't mind bigger guys using their strength as long as they engage in the roll. I have rolled with big guys who just sit in my guard, with good posture, with their hand around my throat stopping me sitting up. Can be annoying until i figured out i can just use my speed to get to my feet and circle their cumbersome frames!

Haha, the gays do love a chubby, and I mean that both ways you can take it. I meant that also. I don't unintentionally pun!

I don't advocate brute force, and I try not to outpower somebody. If I am met with resistance I don't grit my teeth and power through, I try something else. I'm fat, I have a pretty low mpg rating, and I don't want to waste the little gas I have revving and getting nowhere. I hope cars revving uses up petrol. If they don't what I just said wouldn't make sense and I think it is a belter.

However if someone throws a triangle on me i'm going to try and posture. I can't help it when someone is light and it's easy for me to do so. I also can't help that I don't budge when someone tries to sweep me because I weigh a tonne. Well I could lose the clevage but I can't do anything in that hour or two on the mat about it!

All I am saying is don't hate on us because we like a bowl or three of weetos in the morning. They are delicious and chocolatey.

I love rolling with the big guys. Yesterday i rolled with someone who was weighing in at 20 stone 2x while im weighing in at 12 stone. i lasted 5 minutes each time before being put in side control and having a Kimura put onto me which was game over lol.

Though at 1st i hated rolling with bigger guys but i've recently noticed its improving my core strengh quite alot and my cardio. I dont feel while against people who are my weight or around it that i'm using as much strengh nor do i feel much fatigue. My cardio is still not perfect but i think i will try and roll with people who are much heavier than me more often.
