Thats NOT rubber guard. Looks to me like hes isolated the guys right arm and is trying to work for an Omoplata.

What's so funny about someone using high-guard?

I found it funny how people thought, eddie was the creator of the rubber gurad, also this is rubber guard 101 imo.. when i ever use rubber guard i do what roger is doing here, get rubber guard, hand to the mat pass the head. Nice to see the worlds best grappler thought it was good too.

Nino Schembri was using it a long time ago, check out his videos.

If you want to call it rubber guard, yeah. I don't understand why there is any need to "admit" anything though. People have always and will always use high-guard and variations. All Eddie Bravo has done is give some specific positions and transitions names... and market himself well.

Well, if by "marketing" you mean using the rubber guard to submit Royler, previously undefeated in ADCC, then you are correct

Well, marketing himself off the back of that win is what I meant.

EDIT: ...and not only was Royler previously undefeated, but he hadn't even had a point scored against him.

Leigh, he never used the rubber guard to submit Royler. The triangle that finished the fight was caught and set as Royler tried to pass - this was not done from rubber guard.

I haven't seen the match for a few years but as I recall, Eddie regained butterfly guard from side control using the Jailbreak and using an overhook, he threatened and oma plata and switched it to a triangle

True, he did not use the positions we are familiar with but he did use his overhook and his legs to control posture. His rubber guard was still in development back then and he was still brown belt - I emailed him in 2002 to find out more about this "rubber guard" thing I was hearing rumours about

agree it wasnt rubber guard he submitted royler with, but bread and butter BJJ, which is probably more impressive in my eyes

What's bread and butter bjj? Is this a new system? I like the sound of it! "My jits is the bread and butter, and unfortunatley for you you're the filling!"

I think that is what Eddie termed London guard but when you have both hands on the same side I think Shawn Williams from Renzo's gets the credit for that. If Roger still trains at Renzo's I guess that is where he was exposed to it.

I also believe that Eddie took London guard out of his system after Joe Rogan got stopmed using it whilst MMA training or so the story goes.

Rob T
03-09-2009, 09:11 AM
Yeah, Shawn Williams guard is what Roger was using (and Eddie Bravo calls it "London" for some reason).

Bravo said he took it out of 10th planet because it's too easy for the guy on top to jump right over to side-control (like the usual omoplata escape) but really I don't see that. I find in that position I have enough control to stop them jumping clear over me.

Yeah... plus at 2.30 he was in new york. Then reverted back to closed guard.

i thought he took out the london because it traps both of your own arms?

That's part of it, yeah. What he said on the UG was that he thinks the pass to side control on the far side is too easy from there because you don't have an arm free to block it.

I've never found that people are able to do that when I use that set-up though. Maybe if I was loose with it... but even then it's a pretty easy position to bail from and go back to guard.

Did he not just take it out because he didn't invent it? lol

Not sure how you can 'take out' something from a system though, if you use it you use it... its just jiu jitsu?

but your jiu jitsu might not be my jiu jitsu, faced with many options you might not take the option i would take. that is where a system begins to come in

Krusty burger took out the 'Whatcha MaCarcass' sandwich after it was declared a health hazard.

I suspect Eddie took London guard out due to the same reason.
