Hi, im looking to start training mma with a friend of mine.

Im from the northwest (warrington) and i am aware that wolfslair is just around the corner, are you aware of any other gyms in the surrounding area?? Also am i better of starting at a smaller gym to begin with?

Also is it better to train to a specific style first of all, or just all round mma (stand up, ground etc...)

Thanks in advance.

Join at the place you believe will give you best instruction really..
iif your not thinking of starting for a few weeks maybe it will give you time to improve your fitness, which will help a lot.. But, if your just gonna jump right in and start straight away full on training that's upto you uno..

Just do what you feel suits you to start off ii s'pose, atleast you have a friiend to start with.. company is a good thing, you'll be able to help each other out thata way..

P.S. There's no right or wrong place to start off at to be perfectlyy honest.. Ground or Standing.. its all personal preference && what you've found interesting..

Maybe try one that's more a stand up gym and one that does more grappling and see which one you like best.

Though the classes will tend to bring your fitness on quicker than doing it on your own, depending on the personal motivation etc. First night I started was 1 hour circuit, 1 hour thai ,1 hour BJJ back to back, think about 20-25 minutes into the circuit class I was asking myself wtf I was thinking, by 45 mins was about ready to shit myself and I think I made it to about 20 mins before the end in the BJJ class before I was pretty much just lying on my back burst after some rolling. SO much to be gained from just sticking at it though and wouldn't have changed the fact I just went and started from scratch.

EDIT - just noticed it was the ask the fighter section this threads in, I'm far from that, been doing it pretty much bang on a year now, currently off training and work with sciatica though which sucks, seems to be on the mend now though.

I would go to the wolfslair straight off the bat, you'll learn more.

try a few gyms around the area, see what suits you best, training / attitude / location etc.

Not all gyms are for everyone but there will be one that suits your needs.

A good idea would be to talk to the bodyactive guys in Warrington, Bodyactive sponsor alot of events and will know a lot of gyms in the surrounding area.

I believe there are two gyms in Warrington running MMA classes. One is in Woolston, but don't know anymore that that. The other is Warrington Wolfslair (Cheshire Martial Arts) In the centre close to Wolves rugby stadium. Run by Dave Jackson. The MMA classes here are aimed at beginners.
