Hi all,

Someone mentioned cleaning gum shields with dettol the other day, what strength and how often?

Thanks

Soak it in anti-bacterial Denture cleaner for 15 minutes, brush (without tooth paste) and rinse.

Just wipe it on your shorts and stick it back in its gungy case. Simples.

I use dissolving anti bac stuff like retainer bright, or opro do their own version specifically for gumshields. every time I use it I clean it with a toothbrush then soak it in this.

Wouldn't you have to already have a gum disease in order to infect your own mouthguard?...or do you "share" mouthguards? cause, you know, that's messed up

Meh, I guess it's possible; plus stale spit never smells nice.

I just swill mine under the tap. Never had any problems.

I'd think the denture cleaning tabs may be a bit harsh on the rubber, like. Seeing as they're designed to melt crap off a prosthetic tooth.

I'd try a mix of mouthwash and water, perhaps; get a minty flavour too

Nah, it's fine. The stuff nowadays is made for the clear plastic retainers as well, which I wear. I use Efferdent- but I'm not sure if that's marketed in the UK. I got the denture cleaner advice straight from a dentist. But you should at the LEAST wipe it off on your shorts, instead of just leaving blood on them.

WTF?! Are those in a tablet form that you drop in water? I’m wondering, because it looks like the same type product I use; but the cost is way different. I also own the Sonicare FlexCare with Sanitiser (same brand) and there’s no way in hell I paid that much. I think UK is getting ripped off.

Yes, they are tablets that you drop in water. I think 36 tablets for £4.75 is a fair price, tbh!!!

Probably last you a couple of years!

retainer brite is only good if you use it really often (they say every day) don't expect it to clean a really soiled gumshield

I find it works fine every couple of weeks. of course it is important to also ensure you clean your teath and you rinse your gum sheild after use.

Tablets cost a bit more, but not that big of a big deal. I’m not 100% certain, but I think they’re charging roughly $160.00 US dollars for that exact same toothbrush I paid $70.00 for. I don't know, (maybe I'm poor compared to everyone else) but to me that’s awfully expensive. Is that not a lot of money for a toothbrush to you?

I'm not interested in a toothbrush... I was talking about retainer bright being a reasonable price

I generally just rinse mine under the tap (that's what my dentist said to do with it), but you could think about soaking it in Milton fluid (the stuff that is used to clean baby bottles).
