View Full Version : A bit worried about low resting heart rate.

So yeah, when I'm fit my resting heart rate is usually around 50-60 bpm. Unfit usually around 70 +.

I have literally not trained for months ( a little bit of rolling here and there ) and after seeing the thread on HR monitors I dusted off my polar and stuck it on. My RHR was 40. ' Nah that can't be right ' I thought and put my hand on my chest. lo and behold it was beating extremely slow, way less than 1 per sec. I don't get it. I havent done any cardio at all. Only thing I can think of is I have just came off 2 lots of anti-biotics 2 weeks ago for helicobacter and chest infection but cant imagine that would affect it. I have also took a few anti-inflammatories the past 2 days for a neck injury but again can't see it being that.

Anyone got any ideas as to why it's so low after a long lay off ?

Have you been feeling really ill, or had any side effects from your medications? And have you taken your resting heart rate over at least 3 days so that you can get an average reading? The younger you are, the lower it’s supposed to be- so being under 18 puts you on a different chart all together. Also, long distance runners tend to have freakishly low RHR.

isnt that low a good thing , mine is about 70,At the top of his career,

Miguel Indurain had a physiology that was not only superior when compared to average people, but also when compared to his fellow athletes. His blood circulation had the ability to circulate 7 litres of oxygen around his body per minute,[1] compared to the average amount of 3-4 litres for an ordinary person and the 5-6 litres for his fellow riders. His cardiac output is 50 litres a minute; a fit amateur cyclist's is about 25 litres a minute. Also, Indurain's lung capacity was 8 litres, compared to an average of 6 litres. In addition, Indurain's resting pulse was as low as 28 BPM, compared to a normal human's 60-100 bpm , which meant his heart would be less strained in the tough mountain stages.[2] His VO2 max was 88 ml/kg/min; in comparison, Lance Armstrong's was 82 ml/kg/min[3] and Greg LeMond's was over 92 ml/kg/min.[4]

My 2p's worth as a technician working in a cardiology department (and no where near claiming to be an expert on every thing cardic related), your heart rate isn't so low that it would jump out at me as being a major problem, there is a lot more variation in a "normal" heart rate than 60-100bpm as quoted in a lot of places. You mention different drugs you have been taking recently, drugs can of course have a number of side effects and it is possible this could have caused it, when he take a patients history at work we not only ask about any cardiac medication they are prescribed but any drugs they are taken at all. I would recommend you see your GP about it, there are a few simple tests they can refer you for, more to put your mind at rest than any thing

isnt that low a good thing , ... Indurain's resting pulse was as low as 28 BPM, ...

While it's true lower generally can mean better, I'd say 99% of the people I've seen with heart rate of around 30bpm are stopping at the department for one last check before they have a pacemaker fitted ;)

Don't worrie to much about how fast your heart beats as long as it doesn't stop. Check your blood pressure and see what that is like. If its far out then see a doctor and they will check it all out for you.

Gav, you're missing the point mate. I realise lower tends to be better but I'm wondering why it's dropped so low after months of doing nothing. Surely it should have increased it's always around 60 when I have been fit in the past.

Checked it again today and was still 40. As far as being ill from medication only thing I had was the shits off the erithromycin or whatever its called but that was weeks ago.

I guess it's nothing, if anything else strange happens I'll go to the docs.

Mike what is this obsession you have with Lupus ? I have seen you put that in a few threads....please explain.

Jamie, mine has been as low as 32bpm mate. Doctor was woried at first but after extensive tests found nothing wrong at all and put it down to my fitness.

I train about 15 hours a week (so not really a HUGE amount of hours compared to some) and I am sure there are people fitter than me :)
