The nature and tone of the article isn't the greatest but it's exposure nonetheless! At least Rosi and Lisa come off well.

I agree. When you're dealing with some of the most bigotted and mysoginist tabloids for the middle class, it's a huge risk and the article is more positive than I expected.

</+ sarcasm>I'm impressed with the reporters extensive knowledge of Rosi v Windy Tomomi. </-sarcasm>

It's brilliant what Rosi and Lisa are doing for the sport.

I don't know why they have to put stuff like that in an article which also features positive aspects - mentioning the sucess of the ufc in the states and the formalisation of the unified rules for example. I enjoyed reading it though - one of the first newspaper articles which seems to be researched on some level.

What a load of bollocks with very little research "she broke her oppenants ankle wrenching it with her own hands" this is very badly written and negative

That bit was particularly painful to read, just a horrible article filled with quotes and points taken out of context.

I'm sure someone could write gruesome descriptions of horse riding accidents that happen much more frequently than injuries in mma if they wanted to present a distorted arguement.

When writing articles about MMA, it appears that the temptation to sensationalize, i.e. talk about the early days of the UFC, broken limbs, NHB, etc., is too great for the vast majority of journalists that are unfamliar with our sport. They never focus on the modern-day status of MMA, which has come on leaps and bounds and is now a highly professional, regulated, legitimate sport.
We should be grateful that there are peope like G Davies out there to counterbalance this ignorance and provide informed, intelligent coverage of MMA in the national media.

The husband's comments about track athelete's are a bit out of order though.

It was also grossly inaccurate. Rosi and Windy were stood up in a clinch when Windy broke her leg iirc. It was a very nasty injury but completely accidental. It's the type of injury which could happen in most sports if someone's footing and balance goes.

Sounds like Rosi should sue for defamation of character and/or slander.

My mistake, it happened during a take down but still accidental and could easily happen in judo or wrestling etc.

Here's a link to the actual fight.

You gotta love the comedy press! :D

I think the actual quote was "...broke a Japanese opponent's ankle by wrenching it with her bare hands". Clearly I got punched in the head harder than I thought, because that's not how I remember it!

Perhaps they meant "bear hands". I can see how these could quite easily be mistaken for MMA gloves...

You do need to take quotes with a pinch of salt in the papers though.

He doesn't come across very well.

You have to take it all with a pinch of salt, I didn't get interview by them and neither didnt the effing and blinding hubby ;)

but hey i dont take it the wrong way, people will always have their own opinion, regardless of the media. Those in the sport know what its about. Those who know my hubby, well lol he's "one of a kind" - I think Rosi may agree to that lol :D

The documentary is on tomorrow and he may come across as abusive but hes just very passionate about the sport - just like most of us :)

John is a quality bloke. Passionate, knowledgable and 100% committed to martial arts and his students. Totally foul mouthed of course, but in a good way!

I thought that you both deserve a massive thank you for allowing such a personal scope into your lifes as female mma fighters - truely opened my eyes.

I wish you both the best of luck for the future and il be watching :)
( Is this the place to come and follow your progress, as in do you regularly post updates and videos etc?? )

Agreed! :D

Massive respect to two amazing female MMA fighters, found it truly inspiring! The documentary was really good & shown the hard work, determination, blood, sweat & tears behind fighting in Mixed martial arts in particular for two women and doting mothers!

Congratulations to you both, lots of luck for the future! xxx

Just happened to catch this documentary last night when I was flicking through channels and it was pretty good, Rosi and Lisa both came off well and best of luck to both you.

Rosi would you take on men at a similar weight if it was allowed?

Really enjoyed the documentary, caught it on bbc iplayer yesterday, the article is a bit different thought. I think as Lisa said, her husband is passionate about the sport and thats why he was swearing. i was thinking he was being harsh at first but then i said to myself, would i be thinking the same about him if he was talking to a bloke like that?? No i wouldn't, it was just because its a female. So if you look at it like hes speaking to a mixed martial artist who just lost a fight for something petty (and put gender aside) Then no, he is just frustrated, and it doesn;t seem as harsh.

The article is a bit bizarre like i said, theres not many facts in there and I think that the fact Rosi is so academic and has done very well in that field, and the fact that both women are happily married and have children. It proves that womens mma isn't full of butch no brainers as the media would like to lead people to beleive.

Although they still managed to fit "broken nosed, cross dressing cage fighter Alex Reid" then a quick jibe about him being on BB, But such is life.

Its brilliant what you 2 ladies are doing for the sport. Keep it up :)

I don't think it's just because Lisa is a woman. I never had that approach from a coach and neither have any of the male fighters that my coaches worked with. I think it's more frustrating when you're partners as, ultimately there are more sacrifices made on both sides of the relationship. Plus there are different approaches! John's evidently very passionate and gets results from it.

Yeah i see what your saying, but from my point of view, if i saw a bloke shouting at his male fighter it wouldn't be anything different. It would be a coach being a good coach and caring about you and being passionate about what your doing. But if a man is shouting and swearing at a woman, there is a bit of a shock factor (for me anyway) I just dont like to see it. But if I stop viewing them as "women" and start looking at it like, a coach shouting at his mma fighter. Then its not as harsh. Do you see what Im saying?

But DEFINATELY more frustrating when your partners by the looks of it, it was demonstrated with Rosi and Lisa. And how tense things can get right before a fight.
