Hi All,
Just wondered what your thoughts are on the subject of wearing wrestling boots in grappling. Some people use them to stop niggling foot injuries, some like the grip they have on the mats, some hate them for lack of feel and disruption when playing guard.
Do you wear wrestling boots or know anyone who likes wearing them? what are the advantages and disadvantages and does one outweigh the other?
Cheers

I feel that people who wear grappling boots during Jiu-Jitsu should be injected with mega aids!!!!

wearing wrestling boots in bjj is just a bad idea, i don't like wearing knee pads either in comps. I find it hilarious when guys wear wrestling boots and everyone automatically goes, "He's a wrestler".
I wear them if I have a foot injury but that's it.
In my experience they make wrestling standing easier (more grip and protection) but wrestling on ground harder (less sensitivity and dexterity), especially when playing a bottom game.

Ive just started to wear them and I love um, mainly because my feet are fucked lol i also was wondering what people thought of rolling with someone wearing them? as I've been asked a couple times to take them off....i never had any problems with rolling with anyone in a pair.

I wear wrestling boots purely to keep my feet warm. Lots of people complain about the velcro scratching them, & in the past i've been asked to take them off. At the minute though the gym is freezing & everyone is wearing their boots for the same reason.

The classic argument against them in nogi is that it can make escaping footlock and heelhooks exceptionally difficult.

And putting in the hooks can be a pain in the arse as well.

i think that is why tey are a high percentage sub in sambo as the heelhook/foot lock is more difficult to escape with the boots on

I am with the majority here. The pros of wearing foot attire in a submission grappling event of any kind is the footing factor only. That is far outweighed by your opponent being able to have a handle of sorts for a grip during leg submissions.

iirc, popular misconception but heel hooks and twisting leg locks are not legal in sport sambo (they are only allowed in some modified freestyle sambo rules like those of the american sambo association). You can only do straight foot and leg locks/kneebars.
Chokeholds are also illegal in sport sambo.
All these things are allowed in combat sambo.
Armbars are, i believe, the most high percentage sub in sport sambo.
