I currently pay £100 a month for me and my girlfriend to use David Lloyd. The facilities are excellent, but I'm now thinking that I could convert my spare room, cancel Lloyds and use the money I save to pay for MMA lessons in one of the gyms near where I live.

I've already got a treadmill (roger black endorsed one).

Can anybody advise on any basic equipment and recommend where to get it from please?

There are so many different bags out there and I've got no idea what makes each one different from the next. I need mats, but again, what mats are best and why?

Got a skipping rope. Got a Bas Rutten workout CD.

So if I can sort a bag and mats out, and maybe a medicine ball I will be on my way. Anyone selling any unwanted gear?

What if your lass doesn't want to do the bas cd in the garage, hardcore kettlebell workouts and punching stuff. What if she likes using all the posh equipment, checking out all the hunks and going for a nice swim afterwards etc...

Selfish bastard IMO

If she actually used DL it would be more value for our money. We have been members for about ten months and she has been with me about five times. I don't think she has ever actually broken into a sweat.

And she is 23 weeks pregnant now as well.

Put a couple of Swedish students in the spare room and charge them rent. This pays for your david lloyd membership and the MMA lessons, gives your girlfriend female company whilst you are out starting bar fights.

We used to rent our spare room out (to a gay French guy) and it has put us off the idea for good.

One day when my family came round to visit he left his bedroom door open with a big, wobbly rubber first on a plunger stuck to his table. And when we went to Thailand on holiday, we came home to find our couch broken where he had been getting boned dead hard on it.

it will cost 1,500 - 2,000 to set up a decent home gym. my matts alone are about £1,000... just sold my car , now I am buying my own cage ! it will be like rio hero's round mine

£1,000 for Mats???

Is it a huge area? My room (at a guess) is about 12 foot by 15 foot.

I won't be getting a cage in or anything like that. Maybe if I win the Eurolottery £85m like.

Are Mats really expensive bits of kit then?

Bulk buying foam from factories with a canvas or pvc covering cuts matting costs down considerably and this surface also has no gaps unlike mats.
Lifting platforms can be built using a strip of plywood and two lengths of stable matting (6ftx3ft) down either side. The stable matting should cost about 40 or 50 quid all in and however much the plywood(not chip board!) strip costs.
You can e-bay oly lifting bars and second hand plates which cost a lot less than a texas power bar and new disks.

Squat racks are really coming down in price right now too and can also be used for benching.

A couple of bags (one for ground and one hanging) can be bought second hand off of e-bay for a reasonable price too. I think that buying the right things from the right places should half or third the price of your home gym.

I've spent a fair few quid kitting my garage out, but the best advice I would give you is to buy never gymless from www.rosstraining.com.

Ive got a cheap bench and weights that i got second hand, a swiss ball a small bag and a little bit of matting, not enough to roll on but enough so that i can drill techniques, do the bas cd etc and a some resistance bands that my wife stole from work, £200 in total at most.
I do want a really good chin up bar and some kettlebells, you dont need to spend alot of money, you just need the right routines.

My wife used to get pissy about me spending a couple of hours at the gym whereas at home i can be in and done in 45 minutes which is ideal, you also dont get wankers walking around in aftershave (one of my gym pet hates) at your home gym.
