Hi,
What are peoples thoughts on how good running on sand and doing sets of running up sand dunes for fitness??
I have read in various other posts and on other forums that hill runs are one of the best ways to get your bjj fitness up (I know there are circuits etc) but was looking for peoples views on the beach/dune runs.
My own thoughts are that is really beneficial due to the intense nature of running up a sand dune, as this totally takes your breath away, plus it will also do some muscle building due to the driving the quads go through.
I would do normal treadmill/road runs but don't find that appealing and prefer the shorter, more intense sand dune format.
Peace.

I have been thinking the same due to the surface of the sand, I was going to put some weights in a bag and put it on my back and do some running.

I think it's potentially dangerous.
Running barefoot on the sand obviously carries the risk of stepping on sea shells, broken glass, discarded syringes or whatever.
Running in shoes also has dangers; stepping on a rock hidden by the sand and twisting your ankle violently.
Rather just sprint in a shallow swimming pool

It is a sandy beach DanCrase, no rocks/syringes. I am more interested in peoples views on whether it is a good idea as opposed to long treadmill/road runs.
Leave the health & safety out of it. When people ask about squats they don't need prep talks on here;)
Any decent comments??

It would deffinatlly improve your fitness but whether it would improve BJJ fitness is another thing altogether. I see no great carry over myself. BJJ is made up of a lot of pulling, pushing & isometric holds & should be trained to mimc that as much as poss. The beach running can compliment that but shouldn't be the main tactic to improve matt fitness.

Cheers colonel.
I may well look at drills online to further aide my fitness.

Running on sand and in water are both great because there's added resistance and it significantly lowers the impact so your knees won't be fucked when you're 50.

Great for improving ankle strength and stability. Also, as just noted, saves impact on your joints.

Great for fitness generally, but as to BJJ fitness.... I think as much mat time as possible is far and away the most important thing for that.

it smashes my (puny) calves. 2k at a decent pace and i'm done. I live by the beach and should do it more. Never been a morning person and too hungry by the time i get home to bother normally though

Yeah agree about no substitute for mat time but don't have access to get a decent session in on a Saturday morning. However, I have noticed an improvement already. It really opens the lungs up as well and much prefer the fresh, sea air as opposed to the bo of the gym.
Of course staying off the booze has helped as well!!

Have you been running on the beach yet? If not don't go bare foot and take your time and don't go hell for leather to start with. i used to run on the beach for my kickboxing fitness and added in some sprints and stair running about 2-3 months out from a tourney. my advice would be to give it a go and if it desn't work for you at least you haven't spent loads of money on the gym for using the treadmill.
good luck
