when I slip punches I always end up with my head on the wrong side. Fortunetly I havent been smashed because of it yet. but how can I make sure my head is on the outside?? obviously practise but is there anything else.

its just a trained flinch reflex off a punch. the only way its going to work mate is to constantley train "jabbing and blocking" until it becomes second nature.

Is it worth practicing with a slip rope aswell?

Make your pad man throw punches at you between combinations so you can slip them. But hard and fast shots at the face, no point in getting clipped all the time and shrugging it off as it wasnt full force so your okay. You should just get out of the way and over time it'l become instinctive.

It's a long bit of string/rope which you can tie at opposite ends of a cage (or two different poles or suitable supports) and you slip underneath it, static, standing still whatever.
Couple of vids on youtube i think......

Slipping inside is as useful a skill as slipping outside. Slipping outside i find works better with a pivot

Pivotting has numerous advantages due to you stepping out of the opponents 'dangerzone' and having the opportunity to attack. Body movement and positioning will set up various shots of that side of the body.
That is one of the main things i teach on my seminars for MMA striking:)

What he said. Its a very offensive defense if that makes any sense.
