View Full Version : Thai fight experience vs mma.

So I decided before I got back into mma ( havent fought in over 2 years ) I'd have a thai fight or two to help get a bit more stand up experience. Question is, what sort of record should I be looking at fighting ?
I've had 4 pro mma fights but literally only ever relied on my ground game as I have hardly done any stand up training ( bits of boxing over the years and pretty new to thai ).
Should I be looking at fighting someone whos had maybe 2 or 3 thai fights or would that be too much experience ?
It's hard to judge as someone can fight pro mma with zero stand up so would be a complete novice at thai, but I guess its valuable competition experience that counts...or is it ?

Do an inter club first mate, you'll fight someone who hasn't yet had a pro thai fight and usually has between 0-3 interclubs.
See how you go with that and you'll know your level much better.

Agreed. You can find semi contact muay thai (i.e K-Star), and full contact (i.e Master Sken, Woking shinkick) depending on where you are based. Some may only allow you to represent a club though, not independant. Speak to kickboxingidiot (Farhad) on this forum. He's based in Sheffield though. Will.

Have a word with Dave, theres a show on in may, where a few of the lads are fighting. You missed an interclub today in spennymoor, so im not sure when the next one will be. I think just fight somebody with 0-3 fights to be fair. because although Ive done no mma at all, I know its very different to thai, blocking kicks and stuff, and not able to take it to the ground (which by the sounds of it is your strong point)
Get yourself to more thai sessions pal, and have a word with dave tonight, or whenever you get a chance, see if he reccomends how you go about getting some thai fights. May is a long time away, you will have enough time to train for a fight if he can get you one.

If its your debut just take another debut fighter I would say or someone with maybe 1-0 record. Wouldnt go for anyone more so as their record will just mean they'v had that many fights which count for a record.
Chances are they have had numerous competitions and tournements that dont comprise to make a record at all. I know in alot of kickboxing cases a fighter doesnt really venture into the single fights unless they have the necessary experience and skills to deal with it, ie. they have competed extensively on the tournement scene! So come fight time you might actually be way over matched if you get where im coming from, debut fighter id say!
If you destroy him then so be it, you know where your at and can target some bigger fish next time out!

Dave said hed get me a fair fight but just wanted an idea of the caliber of lad id be fighting if that makes sense. He didnt ask me to fight on the interclub. . Not that i could have anyway i got gastroentritis again so wont be training for a while. :-(

Ah bad times. Yeah daves a legend, he knows his stuff. As long as he's confident for you to fight, you'l be sound pal. He's the expert mate, as long as he's giving you the info on the fight, you'll go in there and smash your opponent. You'll probably find as well, whne you get back to mma, you'll be checking kicks, and throwing more stand up strikes as well. All the best pal, I'll hopefully see you at thai when you get better mate. Get well soon.

Thanks for the mention will ;)
Staying on course of the topic,
If you have had 4 MMA fights (PRO) you probably would have done a fair few Amateur and semi pro mma.
Matching you with a first timer would not be a good idea. I would match someone of this standard with a kickboxer with perhaps 2 fights experience. That could be feasible.
I have matched up MMA Fighters on my shows in the past and yes the skills often transfer over but you cant always match up someone with 4 MMA fights against someone with 4-0 in kickboxing. You need to work with a promoter who either knows your standard or someone who's matchmaking you trust.
