View Full Version : Anyone play the piano
As the title says does anyone here play the piano, im thinking about taking a few lessons and seeing how it goes.
Dont get me wrong i never thought i'd be one wanting to learn the piano but im going to take the time to do something in my life that i never thought i would, and that is learn to play the motherfucking piano!
Now i know this isnt exactly an easy instrument to play and takes years to master but but if there is any budding pianists out there that have any advice about this sweet little piece of kit i would be gratefull.
To clarify and make my self clear, ive always had an interest in learning an instrument and a friend of mine came over from texas last week and started busting out linkin park tunes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3-cQXulLmo&feature=related and andrea bocelli http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4slzKKp-UI&feature=related tunes on the piano at a family soiree and people were hanging off his balls.
Not only is this an ideal way to get laid it is also good to have in your arsenal,
So any advice would be welcome frens.

Its something Ive always wanted to learn to play. My missus is grade 6, she rarely plays now though and I keep motivating her to play. Its something thats awesome. She said "prepare for the theory, its horrible" Thats the best I can give you mate. Any specific questions I can ask her for you matey? Or just PM me as and when you want to ask them. Shes not the fountain of knowledge like but Im sure she'll be able to help, Unless you find a lad on here who plays regular, he'll no doubt be more use.

I took up the piano this year but have casually played and practiced keyboard on off for several years so I know my way around it pretty well.
Did you know that you have to be a Grade 5 in piano before you can become a high school music teacher? Neither did I until I looked up the course.
There's some cool youtube videos of a guy playing Tool songs on Piano.
Check him out playing Lateralus. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOGCDc34m-4)
fucking hell that guy can play, didnt think too much of the singing but he makes the playing the piano look effortless.
Are you self taught frakes or are you having lessons old bean?

I was originally self taught but started taking lessons last year with Anna Wang of Bath Street in Glasgow.
She is an excellent teacher, I must say and only charges £15 for a one hour lesson which was a good rate compared to other instructors I found.
Like any instrument, learning the right way is very important and now I have to unlearn all of the bad habits I taught myself but I reckon I could be grade 4 or 5 within 2 years. I have a natural apititude for music and can learn most instruments quickly.
I probably should do more with this manly talent.
i agree frakes, make the most of what you have fren, another fine piece of piano playing here to maybe help you in your decision making

Frakes prefers to play the drum kit. But the piano is a manly instrument.

Pearl MRX with a 12", 14", 16" tom configuration and a 20x16 bass drum. It's "Midnight Fade" which is a valiant colour scheme.
A Brass Sensitone snare which I think is 14" if I remember right.
A bunch of pearl stands, Pearl P-2000B Bass Pedal.
Cymbals, 12" flat hats, 16" Z Custom Medium Crash, 18" Z Custom Medium Crash, 18" Z Custom China, 20" Stagg Brilliant Ride.
Heads all Remo Weatherkings on both sides except the bass drum who's batter head is a Remo and the Front end is a custom skin with "DANCE!" written on it in large white type. I also still have the skins that the set came with.

Oh, and my bass drum is pre-drilled so I don't use a tom rack or seperate stands.

Them cymbals
I think they were remo weatherking skins as well. I know they were remo i just cant remember which type, and the bass pedal I had was a pearl power shifter i think. Id love to get another kit but i was building that one from the age of 12-14 and it was all birthday money and paper round money for like a year so i could get certain things lol.
Thats a sweet kit you've got though mate.

I used to be around grade 7 standard but stopped practicing around a year ago, not sure why tbh. Its definitely a great instrument to learn though so go for it.
If you wanna get laid learn the moonlight sonata or chopin's nocturne in c sharp minor...
i've got a mate who could play this piece perfectly
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvm2ZsRv3C8 :O
So true, playing Moonlight Sonata, the theme from "The Pianist" and "Narcolepsy" by Ben Folds Five got my current lady's clothes to fly off at the mere mention of the word "FIRE!"

That's a shame my friend as these things are NOT cheap. The set up I have now has been built over many years of toil. Generally replacing it bit by bit. The only thing that came together were the bass drum and toms replacing the clapped out Mapex I inherited from one of my friends. Pearl stuff is much better. Picked up alot of freebies when I sessioned with some more famous musicians and also through being friends with guys in bands with endorsements, hence the free Z Customs. Only the Stagg Ride now remains from my old setup.
However, I do have a broken 18" crash by Saluda which was awful and when it split it started sounding exactly the same as a Z Custom China. Go figure.

Haha! freebies you lucky man. Its not what you know its who you know. If i ever get another kit, I'll send you a wishlist :p
Nah it was very hard work saving for them being so young but I loved drumming so much i got it. Was worth it.
I can't hear them at the minute, its been a while since Ive heard any sort of cymbal but that doesn't sound good. When you crack a cymbal its heartwrenching. Especially if your playing with people "right session over lads, cymbals cracked" lol.

In this strange case it gave birth to a much better cymbal than the one I paid for. Z Custom china is about £150 but I bought that piece of shit from a dodgy guy for about £40 and it blossomed.
I still use it sometimes because chinas are a silly shape and I don't like bagging them with normal cymbals if I can avoid it.
I love the punchy sound they make though, great for keeping time when you're trying to warm up by playing a Sikth or Meshuggah song.
