View Full Version : BA Strikes
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8563728.stm
I can see peoples view on how corporations can't dictate unreasonable working conditions, but then again It's a hassle for all the people who have booked flights. In this day and age, in our capitalist society sometimes you have to make do and work longer hours, or cut costs to remain competitive. By workers striking it is cutting off their nose to spite their face, because:
1) They are tarnishing the BA brand, to which a lot of people will never use BA again.
2) They're putting their jobs at risk by doing this, which in this day and age, where there are hardly any jobs going for people is indeed cutting your nose to spite your face.
So what does everyone think about this?

It's like the post office too; they keep striking, so companies move their postal contracts to the competition, thus less income etc. The only people who actually have jobs after the reality hits home will be the union bosses who collect subsidies...
As you say Luke, it's a shame but they do seem to be cutting their noses off to spite their faces.

Apparently the staff at BA have better pay and working conditions than other airline employees (I think I saw it on BBC a while back?). The changes will just bring them into line with their colleagues at other airlines. I never choose to fly with BA due to the risk of strikes. Good job too, as I would've had a flight to South Africa cancelled. I have no sympathy for the employees.
PS Luke- The change back to the macaque avatar is long over due!
Good point about the union bosses, Dave. At the end of the day their job is to cause aggro for businesses. Without that they would be out of pocket, so you have to question their best interests sometimes.
...and yes BlueRabbit, I've also got a holiday booked the same time BA are set to strike, off to Cuba for 2 weeks. As for my monkey avatar, yes, it is long overdue and I'm surprised you remembered that I used the avatar before (which was just under 3 years ago).

At the risk of looking like a stalker, you had that avatar some time last year. I only noticed it because I'm an evolutionary biologist and I specialise in Primatology. My Msc thesis was on macaques.

It has it's moments. I've just been to South Africa for a few weeks with my PhD. Monkeys are ace!

Fuck the postmen and airline wankers, if they don't like their job, get the fuck out and give it to someone else who will gladly work for the money they're getting paid.

that is what i think. it was on the news this morning that ba cabin crew get paid on average £7k more than any other cabin crew working for ryanair etc.
i fucking hate unions, good in some cases but there seems to be more and more places going on strike over stupid issues which at the end of the day just hurts the public and will harm the company you work for.
who would ever want to set up a buisness these days.

Pisses me off because I'm constantly struggling to get work, all the work I do right now is oddjobs for friends and contractors, it's quite frankly depressing.
Then you get a ton of pricks like this who get paid a decent enough wage as it is considering the work is definately not hard labour, who piss and moan every few months that they're not getting paid enough or are treated unfairly, give me your fucking job then lol.

Really? Cool, I wondered why you said Macaque rather than just monkey. I took the picture at Amsterdam Zoo about 3 years ago. I'm sure the same 'macaque' is still pottering about, in case you wanted to make a special trip and take your own photos, lol.

It seems that everyone else can see the damage they are doing to BA but themselves. Living near the airport I know a few pilots and steward/ess who all appear to be doing very well .....I think that it is more about maintaining their standard of good living, no matter the cost to the industry.

The postmen !!! now that pisses me off no end the amount of advertizing crap they cram through my letter box each day, I had a moan at the posty a while back, he informs me that he gets one and a half pence per piece of crap, and they push an average of six through each letter box, not a bad little earner at the end of the week on top of their wages. At the end of each week I take all the crap and put it in the nearest letter box.
