N Class is Novice... first time fighters.
my god im dense. that was pretty obvious. cheers.
N class is a no win no lose interclub though usually...can be 3x1.5s, 3x2s or 5x1s all depends but these are WITH shinpads at a minimum, usually bigger gloves, but are essentially a controlled spar in front of an audience..
C Class means 5x1.5m no elbows to head, no knees to head
B Class means 5x2 no elbows to head but knees to head allows
A Class is Full Thai RUles 5x3

Id like to get into thai this year, how many novice fights are done before moving on to C Class, C to B etc?
cheers
ask your instructor ;-)
as i have guys who have taken 4/5 interclubs to get the adrenalin dump thing out the system and feel comfortable, others are too strong or composed to be 'novices' so will go straight into C Class....
rule of thumb for mr/mrs average 2-4 interclubs to get the nerves out
then 5 c class to move up to B
however its all up to the individual..... no one person is the same as the next. As long as both you and your instructor are honest (i.e if you have had 5 pro MMA fights and 15 ABA boxing fights and 20 kickboxing fights) and you just say you are a total novice (as its your 1st thai interclub) then you/instructor are being naughty - fair matchmaking is what its about at this stage of your 'career'
after a few months training start doing interclubs as its the first intro into competition, and well run interclubs are a safe way to get a feeling of what its all about....ie 'sparring' someone from a different gym, in a new enviroment, with a cheering crowd and you having to start to go through pre fight nerves/warmups/weight management/lack of sleep the night before due to nerves/feelings of no whating to get dropped by the first punch or kick etc etc ;-)
you can then assess where you are from there....
but this is all stuff you are your instructor should discuss as he will be able to assess your level and equally you should trust in his/her opinion on how ready you are

definitely try a few interclubs first, there are loads of em round the UK regularly and most of them are no decision.
also the AKA circuit is really really good for getting some ring experience in front of large crowds without fear of getting bashed up. your padded up and there are 3 levels of entry for complete beginners, intermediate and then pro-am. they are IKF sanctioned events and lots of very good thai and kickboxing clubs compete in them on a regular basis.
most of our lads had a few AKA's before going on to c-class.
the scoring is different though as they use the olympic style scoring, but that doesn't really matter when you're just wanting some ring time!
they are also on every other month up and down the country.
