as every one will beaware the cost of VAT is going up from 17.5% to 20% as from Jan 2011.

I now this is going to hit the top end retail products.

The question I would ask is ~ " Are you willing to pay the extra or would you be looking at a cheaper brand's " ~ please be honest as it will help all retailers work out what products they will be carrying for next year.

Personally, I would pay the extra for the brand I want. There is no substitute for quality. I definitely wont be buying as much shit as I do now though

Think of it this way, did you get more people buying higher end expensive stuff when it went down to 15%?

Its a blanket price increase so on the whole for one off items like fight wear and kit, its not really going to affect my decision.
After all on on a £40 pair of shorts (34+VAT) its only going to add, what less than a quid not that big a difference to the end user.

Higher price items, Heavy bags that sort of thing, I can imagine they will be the same, but those big items of stock are probably ordered in for most places so they are all going to have it stuck to them.

I think keep doing what your doing, very few people will have ways round this so unfortunatly we are just going to have to deal with it.

But one thing is for sure its not going back down to 17.5% for a LONG time.

Sucks to DEATH this does.

this is a big increase when we've only recently gone back to 17.5 from 15.

Its one of those things that has to happen and at least we have 5 months to get ready for it ~ I like the responses so far ~ " retailers " are you going to up your prices or are you going to take the hit.

I buy a lot of key products in bulk so I will be able to keep the same prices on at least 50% of my sales but how does it affect the smaller websites and gym shops ~ again keep the thought coming.

even the gyms are going to be hit if they are making more then 63k a year so it may even effect class fee's as well.

We'll be keeping prices the same.

I kind of understand why they have done it, but they have really kicked us in the gut with this one. We aren't exactly booming again are we, I definitely think interest rates are going to rocket. 2yrs time expect to be staring at 8-9-10% at LEAST on your mortgage. :(

the problem is simple.

Vat goes up so if your vat reg then you claim it back so not a major problem.

But if your not then its going to hurt - big time.

Fuel has to be the biggest joke going. Its all speculation and BS to put the prices up.

I guess a lot of people will go out and make planned purchases before the increase, therefore increasing pre Christmas spending rather than January sales?

We will be stocking up on all the products we sell through the gym as much as we can afford to and pass the lower rate on to the students for as long as possible and buying any big gym equipment purchases before January.

What will hit us hard personally is if this causes a rise in inflation and then the interests rates go up as well. We are off our fixed rate morgage now and only paying 2.5% and cant afford an increase at the moment.

Thing is they say they buy their oil 3 months in advance, so when the barrel price drops it takes them AGES to drop the pump price, but a SNIFF of anything going wonky and the price jumps up like a rocket.

I havent been driving that long in the grand scheme of things. 8 yrs in a month. But when I started it was 60p a litre. Thats nearly doubled. Or in some places has done. An thats pretty much how long we've been at it in Iraq!

We've raped the oil from that place. It went up to 1.30 a couple yrs ago because of something with Iran/Russia, cant quite remember, and it has never ever dropped back. Once it went over £1, it hasnt been back since.

And getting a prius wont help, they are worse on fuel than a BMW M3!

As mentioned if your vat registered then its much of a muchness, for the average member here its going to sting.

Membership prices are going to have to rise unfortunately thats unavoidable, Some people are going to drop out as lets face it this is a hobby for most and a luxury for a lot of us, Whats the first to go when the shit hits the fan?

For the companies, sole traders and all the rest out there, on another note I can only recommend maybe looking into various schemes and tax plans out there, A decent accountant will cost you next to nothing in money they save, Not touting for business there lol but its defiantly worth looking into.

As for the M3 being better on the juice the the Toyota I think you may be watching to much Top Gear my man, Buy a huge 7 series Barge for about a grand then tool about in that, money saved on the car will help ease the fuel bill

To be fair its all down to how you drive the car I got a clk and i can do 70-80mph on it get around 400ish miles on a full tank. if i have the air con on and blast it every place i go then i get around 185-200.

not really worried about the vat increase as a buyer or a seller to be honest, I've always seen it going upto 20% was surprised it didnt happen when we where going up from 15.

Your average day to day shop your not really going to notice the difference on prices, maybe it will have an impact buying cars etc buy how many dealers will be doing 0% vat or claim 3% back details etc

Some small business may go bust the ones who make 2-3% margin on items trying to beat next door and internet deals etc, id suppose it depends on the deal you got with trade customers some of them may lower your trade price by 2.5-3% if your not VAT reg (all depends on the deals you do for them etc) delivery costs will go up, or you may see free delivery prices change from £50 to £75 etc to make it worth the small traders worth while.

Importing and duty could become an issue for some people as well at some point again that can all be claimed back but if your business is all about cash flow it could be a risky few weeks - months...
