Some of the established referees like,
Myself, marc Goddard, leon roberts, mark woodard, grant etc evolved into it as mma was developing in the Uk
Now, there are some events using sanctioning via an established group, ISKA for example, where they supply all the officils on the events, all of whom have been on a course within the group.
There are also many people "having a go" a refereeing especially on smaller shows where there isn't much money available to pay for officials.
There are mma events popping up everywhere now, everyone seems to be puting on a show, referees and officials are going to be in demand.
I myself now supply mma officials to events, i can offer the whole package of referee/s, judges, timekeeper, m.c., commentator . these are all people I know and who have grown up in the mma industry.
I also plan to offer short courses to cover the basics in judging and refereeing to at least give new mma officials a start in the right direction until there is an established and recognised system in place. Of course this is only my own perspective and my opinions I can give them based on my 8 years experience of judging and refereeing in mma
Hopefully one day there will be a recoginsed system in place which everyone casn use and will be happy with

That would be good, problem with friends, fighters etc doing the refs job is they might not pick up when a fighter is in trouble. Thats the main concern I have with non official officals.
A course would be spot on, I know a few who would hapily attend something like this

As Neil is offering we do the same through www.mmaconsultancy.co.uk working on shows around the UK as well as abroad. Until there is a regulatory body in the UK its just a case of promoters working with who they can trust and know.
I would like to go on a judging course, to see exactly how they would score fights and to learn more about how hard their job is

Aaron Chatfield has a great judging criteria and well done cards. Better than any i have seen on other shows and it makes for very consistent judging:)

me to , something like this could bring MMA refing inline with BJJ and Boxing.
Even if a list of reputable refs is available to all it would be good.

Aaron's level of understanding of MMA and the extent of his contributions to MMA in the UK have often been underestimated

I have been asked to judge on shows in the past and all i was given is a blank piece of paper to write everything down on and no fightcard. Remember a show where there was only one pen between the 3 judges sat next to each other.

I agree but i think he is starting to get the recognition he deserves and most Northern shows are using his expertise in one way or another now

Aaron is without doubt very good at what he does, consistant also as Ian says

think this could evolve into a some sort Licensed ref register ?
Shows could then approach the register and request refs for there show.
The reason this interests me is the amount of bad decisions that I/we have winessed on shows and obviously the refs not seeing something that is potentialy puting the fighter is danger quick enough.

i started refereeing at small interclubs like Testing Ground and Caged Steel and then slowly moved up to bigger shows. I was fortunate enough to seak advice and watch quality refs like Neil Hall and Trevor and to try learn from them
i think the problem is going to be that some of the better refs see it as a business and are money oriented (which i totally understand) where as refs like me, n i think im as good as anyone out there imvho ;-), are happy to ref for much less money and do it just because i like to be involved in the sport i love
how much a ref charges isnt necessarily a reflection of how good they are.

Nice one Marc, a long time coming this, look forward to it; in addition to my BJJ reffing, I'm going to be reffing MMA events this year and add myself to the pool of refs in the UK. This course is definitely a step in the right direction Marc :)

BAMMA used to provide refereeing certificates and a register, I had that when I worked at UFC 38 and on the Ultimate Combat shows. I had nothing formal as a qualification when I worked on Lee Hasdell's promotions in the early days.
I'd be interested to learn when/if a pro-register of officials is created. Would love to get back into it again, but there aren't many promotions over here in Manila.
