Expect to not get everything straight away, dont go in and try and put holes in the bags, technique first, then power. Listen intently to what people have t say, if you don't understand something, always ask, thats what coaches are there for. drill stuff as much as you can, give it a crack at 100% effort, don't slack, show your coach you want to be there, deserve his training, and deserve his time and effort to put you in the ring one day.
But mostly, have fun, chat to people, make friends. First step into the gym is always the hardest. Put some ice in the freezer for when you get home as well for the old shins. Them bags hurt more than they look like they do :P

You will be sore the next day.... and the next...

Eat 2-3 hours before you go

This, its pretty much mandatory, almost a rite of passage to all newbys. The big guy expects it, but will not just allow you to do it. Headkick for more man points.

but make sure you wai (hands on forehead bow) when he's lying on the floor...
if you don't do that then you'll be in trouble....

lol cheers guys and ill leave the big guys well alone and ill leave the small ones as well haha, what sort of things do they do to strengthen ur shins? and ill be going straight to the gym afterwards for a sauna and jacuzzi haha
There's nothing wrong with knocking around a midget to show your superiority mate. It should be actively encouraged.

Much like everything else, fitness technique etc. your shins will toughen up over time. First, second, third all the way up to the hundreds, of times you kick the bag/make contact with the pad, it will sting.
No doubt it will ache afterwards but thats normal, over time your shins will develop and toughen up to be able to withstand the kicks.
Some Thai Oil (http://www.ckamartialartssupplies.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=976) wouldn't hurt though, its great stuff for your shins. CKA martial arts are awesome as well, help you out no ends and quick delivery too.

I think it can vary greatly. I've been training in MT for just over 2 months and mine dont hurt now kicking pads or bag...

Tire kicking absolutely brutalized my shins at first, but I realized it's less painful if you kick it as hard as you can.
