Started watching some of the early GP's and the rules and organisation of the bouts seems terrible no-one including the refs and commentators seemed to know what was going on. Was there set rules for bout duration or did they make them up as they went along? My wife went mad I said just let me watch this one fight then I'll turn it off. My wife does know a fair bit about MMA so she was ok but what she or I didn't realise was that the bout in question royce gracie v sakuraba was 90 mins long LOL.

The early Pride events were abit weird to say the least but how would you know whether the commentators knew what was going on? I thought the early Prides were commentated in Japanese?

As for the Saku/Royce fight - it was fought under special rules of no time limit.

The pride gp 2000 has some commentary from Bas Rutten etc and it does seem like it has been added after the event. I have heard someone refer to it as having a eurosport feel to the commentary and production.
The consistancy between the bouts is what confuses me especially the bout where Ken Shamrock orders Guy Metzger back to the changing rooms as they only agreed to fight one 15 minute round then after this the pride president appologises to Guy for the mistake/confusion. Then sakuraba fights for a reduculous duration in most of his fights.

haha i keep meaning to re-watch Royce/Sakuraba 1, but never get round to it. feel the need to prove my attention span has not been eroded by modern life.

I liked the 90 min fight

The Pride 2000 GP had set rules apart from the Gracie/Saku fight who had special rules because of the Gracie's. Which could of well robbed Saku of a GP win in the long run.

It's one of those events that you should watch as an MMA fan.

I think the commentary was also live too, in fact i think it was the first Pride show that had live commentary and i think it was even shown like in the US too?

Fairly sure the 2000 GP was the first event where they actually did live commentary. All the previous events had English commentary recorded afterwards. All about that one Mark Kerr fight where Bas is commentating and cornering Kerr at the same time lol.

Edit - Doh! Ian and the Unfit One beat me to it lol, I should really read a whole thread before replying!

I think kainers right you should watch as an mma fan even if they are not the most entertaining. Ha ha the penny never dropped I missed the Bas commentating and cornering at the same time. The thing which makes me chuckle is inbetween the rounds in some fights even the fighters don't know what is going on.
How were the gracie's able to dictate the rules? Was it just the power of the Gracie name in them days. Never knew much about Sakuraba before but after watching lots of his fights he is fast becoming one of my favourite fighters of all time. He always seemed so calm and composed despite fighting for an hour and attempting some crazy moves which any WWE fan would be proud of.
Renzo v skuraba in pride 10 is a great fight
