Just wondering if any of you guys practice techniques that are usually illegal in many comps, like heel hooks and neck cranks etc?

These techniques are normally illegal for a very good reason but do you practice them anyway, just to keep the techniques alive or in case you ever need them in a self defence scenario?

Didn't think the death touch was illegal?

your insane practising this. My mate learnt it, then stroked his dog when he got home from training. He was still in "death touch" Mode. Deed dog.

i was doing heel hooks the other day, recently started rolling a lot of no-gi as opposed to the predominantly gi game i was concentrating on previously. In a lot of competitions heel hooks, neck cranks etc. are legal, so we practise them.

No harm knowing them, just know when NOT to use them, i would never go for one in sparring, and if one of my sparring partners did, i wouldn't try an escape, i would tap straight away, no question.

I wouldn't be looking for heel hooks in self defence.

Wouldn't do them in a gi class. but in no gi or mma yes. But i would be very careful putting them on.

Why not Simon?

Because to sit back for a heel hook is relinquishing a position of dominance.

In the same way i wouldn't try an arm bar from mount in a self defence scenario.I would headbutt and elbow but not spin for an arm bar.

The best defence for a heel hook is to kick your opponent hard in the face with your other leg.

I wouldn't want to put myself in a position where if i lose the heel hook i am in a scramble or,where i am open to being kicked in the face.

Self defence to me is about positional dominance.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Still, I'd rather know how to do it and not have to, than be in a self defence situation where it might come in handy and then wish that I'd practised it a little more.

Not illegal, but what could be considerd "dirty"

For MMA specificly, not for BJJ. Things like putting your hand over the mouth of the opponent, turning the head to one side in sidecontroll, making it uncomfortable etc.

Id use all of them in MMA. None in BJJ.

Am I on drugs or did you say you don't use shoulder pressure in side control when training BJJ?

Pretty high when i posted that, it didnt say what i meant lol.

I meant that in grappling i use what people can consider dickish moves. but i dont in BJJ.

So yes i do use shoulder pressure in BJJ and make it uncomfortable but i dont do anything "dirty" like i do in grappling.

If that clears it up.

Love training heel hooks but follow the good old ' hold and release ' method. I'd be mightily pissed off if someone cranked one on me while rolling.

Awesome post.

Also saying you train something every now and then 'just incase' won't work in a self defence situation where your heart rate is jacked up over 175 beats/minute. Fine and complex motor function goes out the window leaving you with only gross motor skills.... hence head butts, elbows and punching works well.

Knee ride and mount for the win in self defense. You have to make sure you not only have dominance but be able to disengage to deal with others if you have to. I wouldn't want to be in side control (despite being a dominate postion one on one), and then have his mate come in and play soccer with my head.

We've had this convo before, the 3rd hook is a legit technique when attempting the Ukrainian Arm Square.

And if you say different i'll introduce you to my affliction coach, who just happens to be a 3rd dan black belt with purple tiger medal
