Hi,
I am soon to be matting my garage, and was wondering if anyone had any advice.
I was planning on buying 20mm jigsaw matting but putting plywood down first then a 10mm carpet underlay in between the two to improve the give.
Any advice out there for a better way?

It’s about 3m x 6m, I was planning on going all out and getting my mate to upholster half the garage with something like crash mats and the other half I would buy jigsaw mats, but now I’m just thinking that jigsaw mats with some underlay might do the trick.
I was just wondering if anyone had ever done this before or know why it might be a bad idea.

I would recommend an undelay, I have done my garage without the underlay and experience the jigsaw mats moving around from time to time, also noticed that the ones near the garage door have warped, so i also recommend draught excluding the garage door is poss to help minimize this, i suppose!
Other than that it the whole garage, where i have a fridge....for the ladies, a freezer with ice packs, free standing bag, rhino bag for gnp. Free weights, rowing machine and bike, with enough room to skip and warm up and use the bags, then have to move the equipment to the end of the garage for rollin' with ma homies!
hope it helps fella!

ply and 40 mm mats. i did the whole board/underlay/20mm mats in our garage years ago, and it was fine for pad and bag work, and even working on the ground was fine, but i swear getting thrown by a 100kg Judoka you could still feel the unforgiving concrete underneath it all whenever you landed funny. it was particularly bad on the elbow and knees.
Plus everyone complained that the 20 mil mats have too much traction, everyone kept catching/dragging their toes on it. (except me)

I would go with tatami mats on the floor to be honest, save the jigsaw mats and put them around the walls on sheets of plywood.if your garage is well waterproofed then no need for underlay with tatami mats..
how big is your garage ?

I have my own private space in a Safe Store up my end and the way did it was this on a concreate floor.
1. plastic underlay ~ stops damp getting through and if the floor does get wet it stays under the plastic and use the thick stuff such as a tarpurlin etc.
2. then use floor grade interlocking treated chip board panels ~ they slot togeather so no gaps - but do allow for movement so allow at least 1 cm around the outside of the whole area.
3. then use a cheap cord carpet or under lay - which ever is cheaper.
4. then go with 20/25mm for stand work and double them or go with 40mm ( depending on price for take down
I have used 25mm and have 3 crash matts to drop down when needed ).
5. buy a cheap air blow heater as a cold matt is like training on ice so warm the area before using it.
~ if you have the cash then go to any upholstery firm and get a big peice of hard foam and put a wooden frame around it then get a big peice of pvc and staple or screw to at the edges to the frame ( old school baby ) ~
~ always remember to clean the area after use as warm or cold spaces can breed some very nasty bugs ~ I always use a good surface cleaner on my matts - kills everything
