one thing I know is that jabbing without turning the palm down adds distance to the jab. Why is it thrown palm down?

it turns your shoulder inot the shot more as well as forces the hip to work. Punching (and striking in general) is performed by the whole body, punching without turning the palm down tends to be a arm only movement.
