NTL if you have cable, much better than a phone line, up to 20mb
otherwise, if you dont need one that fast, get a GPS adapter for your pc or laptop, you can get around a 2mb connection without having to pay for any service, works off sat. Its the way its all gonna go as theyre currently working on a much faster version, only thing is, itll do away with broadband fees so the industrys not all for it! Already in small form on many mobs, now entering home pc market.
    Hope this helps.

It depends on your area, you dont personally have to have cable TV. As long as theres is cable in your area you can get a good package. the old dear is currently with virgin BB but they're shite as you only get 2mb blah blah blah...

SHe may switch to Sky as for summink like £26/month she'd get cheap phone calls, sky tv, and 8mb broadband.

Check if you have a cable laid in your street...

The maximum rate you get is to do with your local exchange and how recent its equipment is. For example I moved from one end of Reading to the other recently and stayed with Tiscali (Who provide shit service by the way so I don't recommend them) and I get a much faster connection now I'm on the new exchange.

    here we go again.

Unless you buy business broadband, you will usually find your connection is contencious (sp), which means that you essentially share the available bandwidth with the people on your stree/in you area. That is the reason that the same connection size can provide different results in different areas... depends how many subscribers there are.

Alos worth noting that upload and download speeds will be different, broadband is usually weighted to download, so that web (http/https) appear faster.

Also consider that browsers can only make 2 conenctions a once, regardless of speed. I.E. only two objects can be downloaded at any one time
