'Speaking in tongues' is a misinterpretation of biblical verse by overzealous evangelical idiots.

    From Acts 2:

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
In the story the Holy Spirit gives the apostles the power to preach in languages that they do not understand themselves but which can be understood quite clearly by their audience, no matter where they are from or what language they speak.

When modern day idiots start making noises they are clearly not speaking 'in tongues' since speaking in tongues quite literally means speaking in a variety of languages at once but which does not sound this way to anyone listening to it. Ergo if someone was speaking 'in tongues' to you personally you would simply hear them speaking in English.

Unless by your statement they were not speaking to you but to another...
Doesnt the bible also say that there are tongues of men and tongues of angels?
Have you personal experience of this EmmetJ or did you learn this interpretation from a text book? (not being disrespectful by the way, just curious to your answer!)

Of course I learnt this from a textbook, the book was called 'The Collected Books on How to Live Your Life the Way God Wants - With Commentaries by Jesus Christ,' but everyone these days calls it 'The Bible' for short.

The idea that "they were not speaking to you but to another..." does not apply in the case of speaking in tongues. The holy spirit descended upon the apostles and they spoke to all present. And all those there could hear them in their own native language, be they Jew or gentile, be they Palestinian or Roman; it made no difference, the message was there for all men to hear. There wasn't a guy standing at the back going: "I can't fucking understand a word those guys are babbling on about... they musn't be speaking to me."

If these modern 'tongue speakers' do have a message that is solely intended for believers or the 'chosen few' (as some do indeed claim) then they are clealy not demonstarting a very Christian attitude. In fact, one could easily summise they have teen tempted away from the correct path by Satan and his false ways, or even that they are 'possessed by demons' rather than the Holy Spirit.

Finally, I don't have to have experienced people claiming to talk in tongues to see the falseness of the claim. That is not to say that I believe they are all lying, merely that they have been led to believe something based on the false understanding of their teachers.
