Usual disclaimers about diagnosing over the internet apply.

If i understand you correctly - everyone has a lump there (called your tibial tuberosity), but sometimes it can become enlarged and/or painful.

One possibility could be Osgood-Schlatters. Most common in teenagers, but sometimes it doesn't resolve and still gives problems later on (possible, if as you suggest, this is an ongoing problem for you).

It's also possible for adults to get similar symptoms due to significant stress and/or trauma to the knee.

Related quote from Mike Boyle I thought was quite funny...

Osgood Schlatter Disease is any easy diagnosis. If it's a kid, it's Osgood Schlatters, if it's a college b-ball player it's patella tendonitis. I tend to distrust Drs. more and more but, they are here to stay. Be careful. If you think it's a "work allergy" the AirDyne is often a great cure.

There's no easy solution, i'm afraid. There are possibly things that might help, but it would need a proper look at it.

Do you get any pain on movement, or is it just painful when you press it? How long have you had the pain for?

If you do bang it, then getting ice on it asap will help a bit.
