    Do MMA fighters, have to have amateur fights, before they can become professional.

    no but its a wise thing to go amatuer or semi pro first so you get used to it... not really a wise thing to do jumping into pro on your first fight but some others have done.

    i would say only if someone has a really good background in another combat sport, eg Thai Boxing, Judo, or Similar.

    Having been a professional in another sport (non combat) i would say its essential to gain experience before competing in any sport at professional Level.
    The victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory.
