Pavel Tsatsouline (dragondoor.com) created the kettlebell design we see today in the west, and applied a bodybuilding methodology so it would appeal to Americans. Theres nothing wrong with using that, but obviously thats not its purpose as you can tell from the fact its a fixed weight, so progressive overload is not its purpose-so why use it for that?
Instead its purpose is work capacity-how many reps can I do in a time set-in GS competition its 10 minutes.
So unless your interested in doing long duration sets, your better off with dumbells/barbells.

Neil. Checked out the eBay shop. What is the advantage of having a hollow kettlebell over a cast kettlebell? Ive got 2 kettlebells from www.newitts.com and think they are fine!

No advantage. And I'm not advising anyone to buy those kettlebells instead, stick with yours-the difference is in the handle and the size remains the same no matter the weight, which helps when increasing weight as the mechanics stay the same instead of adjusting the technique a little for the different size/shape with each weight of the western kettlebell.
Also my point was that the original purpose of kettlebells is work capacity, mostly an aerobic activity. But today people just use kettlebells in the same way you can use a dumbell, and I think that the way people use kettlebells in the west ie lower rep schemes and lots of different exercises like turkish get ups are great for MMA.
But in Eastern Europe and Russia, kettlebell is only snatch and clean and jerk, thats it. So all the supposed eastern european character people like to associate with kettlebell training doesn't exist, they'r just using the kettlebell in the same way they would use dumbells. Kettlebell use is for long (even 60 minute sets are used for training!) sets which are aerobic in nature but obviously arn't as much benefit to athletes in my oponion.
So all in all, theres no reason at all to use kettlebells over dumbells if your an athlete/general fitness. But if you have them then keep them, but if your new to kettlebells, just buy dumbells, UNLESS your interested in kettlebell sport.

neil: have to disagree,imho kettlebells are far better for swings and snatches, maybe tgu's.
db's are perhaps more versatile though.
