Everybody always accuses him or rather his coach/doctor of dosing him with Winstrol - but its pretty doubtful its a v.weak steroid and easily detectable
(in terms of getting caught you may have well just stuck a needle in your backside on the blocks)

At the time of his conviction the governing bodies had been worried about winstrol as it was starting to grow in popularity amongst female athletes in the off-season due to the reduced masculising effects of the drug - plus reports were that masking agents were on the verge of getting way better many feel they simply blamed winstrol in Ben Johnsons case as a warning shot to others.

Didn't carl lewis recently suggest it should be a criminal offence to take performance enhancing drugs. I don't agree with doping in sport but that has to be one of the daftest things I've ever heard

Well since there is prize money at stake could it be construed as fraud, or deception with intent to defraud etc.

I must admit I hadn't thought of it that way; but by that logic wouldn't a deliberate handball in football also be a criminal offence? If not, where should the line be drawn?

This story really winds me up, Dwain got caught held his hands up and is doing what he can to help reduce the drug taking in sport. Then the british olympic association won't budge.

Fair enough he cheated but you can bet he is now tested at every meeting and gets treated like shit by everyone. Unless you live in a cotton wool filled world you are aware that a very high proportion of athletes will be using something to help them out.

There's a lot of money flying around at the top end, there's glory and there's wanting to be the best. It only takes a couple of things to push these athletes from being on the clean side to the dark side.

The whole anti doping program is out dated, there just for show really because we all know that it's way behind the special vitamin technology out there. I bet that there are even some doctors employed by uk athletics to help source the appropriate "supplements" for the athletes.

I watched a bbc program about HGH and how a lab had spent millions of the IOC's money developing a better test for HGH. If I'm correct the current testing will only detect HGH a couple of days after use. This company developed one that could detect it for up to 3 weeks after use, but the IOC would not allow it for the olympics, think the reason was something about it not being tested properly, despite the company following all of the IOC procedures. Just stinks of not wanting to catch anyone, how tarnished would the olympics be if the a) brought the test in and caught out a load of athletes or b) a load of the athletes pulled out in advance to avoid being caught? I'm certain this is a reason for them having outdated testing as they know it occurs but haven't got the balls to take the initial flack a load of positive tests would cause.

Now I'm not anti doping as I beleive that it is so widespread now the playing fields are relatively level again, it's just the denial of the institutions that annoy me.

With all these conspiracy theories I'm starting to sound like detoxguru!

This is a great thread...lots of intellectual stuff being talked about for a change..

The system is undoubtedly corrupt and as the video showed the althletes have a three strike system over an 18months period...

If they really wanted to catch people then it would be far more stringent with stricter rules implemented. It appears from the outside looking in that the authorities know that it is a sport in which millimeters makes a champion and the slightest edge is the differance between winning and losing. But dont get me wrong here, these athletes are of unquestionable pedigree and are truely the creme du la creme of their respective sports without the gear. By taking the enhancers they simply are looking to secure immortality within their sport and want to be remembered as one of the greats...

Look at the times some of the modern day athletes produce...and of course there are a number of influencing factors as modern day training methods increase the bodys capablities ...

    ie...
Better diets, the importance of rest and recovery, efficent training methods, etc...but of course, IMHO, gear is the dirty seedy secret that lyes beneth it all that everyone is reluctant to speak about..

Maybe im just synical..but i dont think so...
