    Default free photo enhancing software..anyone?

i am trying to do one of those tescos photo books as an anniversary gift for my folks, but the photos i have are scanned from really old photos. When i copy them into the photobook software it says the resolution is not adequate.

Is there a piece of (free!) software i can get that will enlarge/enhance the images without making them "blocky" so they can be used in a photobook?

    cheers!
