Steps V Street
I'm interested to know what the benefits, if any, are of doing step work compared to just normal road running. There's a park by my house with 60 continuous stone steps running right through the middle, my backs killing so I decided to do that tonight instead of road work. I did 15 sets up and down and then 5 sets all out missing a step each time, completely fucked me but felt like I was doing something more, well... explosive? Seems like it might be more effective for MMA training compared to long distance running.
Any thoughts/opinions on this? Thanks!
Long distance running for mma is in my mind a recovery modality, to be used after a high intensity training day.
Sounds to me that you switched from steady pace running to a sort of interval based running program as I assume you got an active rest period on the way down the steps allowing you to hit them hard on the next set.
Plus doing a new activity is always hard.
This would have much more carryover into mma than Long distance running. Although 20 sets of 60 steps is uber tough let us know if you can walk tomorrow
I'm fine, my calves are a little tight but nothing a little stretching wont do. I think this is something I'm going to alternate with running regularly. I just have to put up with the looks from people who think I'm insane
nice one, ive always liked stair running.
I dont think there is many exercises which can beat doing the stairs, or hill runs for that matter. It dramatically raises your heart rate compared to steady running. Also, I think the stairs has helped me with my shot im a lot more explosive and I can drive with more power and less fatigue. When I do steady runs that is more of my active rest to keep the body ticking over. If you want to specify your training even further in terms of MMA, try doing 2 or 3 x 5 min rounds...it will be horrible at first, but once you get used to, youll certainly see the difference in your power endurance. Just a suggestion anyhoo!
