Default Fight week & Warming up for a fight

    Hi fighters

I have a question I would like answered ASAP as I am fighting Saturday Muay Thai if it makes any difference by the way.

How do you train during fight week? I've been told so far to train normally until 4/5 days before the fight and then begin to cool it down just jogging, skipping and hitting the bag lightly to keep me ticking over, sounds good to me, just wondering how you all do it.

My main question relates to the actual fight day. I was at Cage Rage Contenders on Saturday, I saw tons of different methods was warming up prior to the fight. For example:

    1. one guy I saw was dripping in sweat after doing about 30 minutes on pads, literally smashing them for a minute with a minutes rest.

    2. Then I saw other guys doing just speed stuff on the mitts, i.e. jab cross like 50 times and 20 kicks each leg.

    3. One guy from London shoot was doing circuits almost, like 20 punches on the mitts and then 10 sprawls, 10 kicks and then 10 tuck jumps and so on for about 2 minutes... resting for a minute or two and doing simular things.

My last two fights I havn't bothered warming up at all, although I've had the Thai oil massage thing, so I havn't had to you know, not sure what to try this time round, so I'll await your replies

    Hello mate!

The last week should be a taper off, allowing your body to recover and get strong, while working short sessions sharpening fight specific skills to reinforce the firing of your muscles...

Jogging, skipping etc is not fight specific...that kind of work should all be done...

To prepare for the fight you should enter the arena (cage or ring or mat) with your body relaxed, warm, breathing and heart rate through the 'first wind' and settled down, and with a revision of the fight specific moves to help prepare your mind...all combined with whatever mental approach is necessary to get you focused for the fight.

Anything that breaks your body down is too much...

Anything that doesn't get you in the above is too little...

Personally I loosen off, then shadow preparing my mind, before doing some short sharp padwork strikes, with walking off between combinations, getting me all warm and getting my heart rate high...then warm top on and keep the heat...just before I go out to fight a couple more padwork combinations to elevate heart beat and maintain heat....then a quick 'mental release'...then use a meditation technique called 'one point focus' combined with some NLP techniques...then fight...

    Hope this helps!

What works varies a lot between different fighters - you need to find out what works for you, not what everyone else is doing

With that said, I think one of the most common mistakes fighters make is not warming up enough and starting the fight cold. I find I perform best if I feel like I've done a couple of rounds already before the fight starts.

Hi Ross, NLP is all about providing an 'anchor' to return you to a previous physiological and psychological state that you have set up...

The 'L' is for linguistic, which is words, but you can also anchor to smells, touches, music, all in the right context.

So basically my 'one point' is something that induces the change in my mind and body, getting me prepared maximally for training...

Research it, it will do you good!

Yeah, but its not about psyching yourself up, there's much more to it than that...
