The guy who devised sambo was one of Jigoro Kano's top foreign students. He went back home to Russia and mixed the judo with Russian styles of jacket wrestling. So, like BJJ, sambo is an offshoot of judo.
In sambo, you are not allowed to strangle, and there are far fewer rules than judo with regard to how you have to grip your opponent- ie you can basically hold however you want. You are not allowed to strangle / choke, but you are allowed to do straight leg locks - ie knee bar or achilles tendon hold (but no heel-hooks!)
In Britain, most of the players are converts from judo, so their throws are all done judo-style. Pure sambo players have a slightly different feel to the way they do things. Well worth checking out is a Russian guy who lives in Scotland - Vadim Kolganov (do a search for Dynamo Sambo) he used to teach Geoff Thompson. He was Moscow state champion when he was younger. I attended a seminar with him about 8 years ago and was highly impressed.
One thing that is worth mentioning, is that guard-passing is not really part of the game, because the top player is considered to have a pin even if he is in the guard (unlike in judo).
