I think this is the general reason why it's frowned upon.
Some instructors don't like their 'secrets' or go to moves being widely shared around. I could be wrong though.

One problem I have is that I work shifts, so have to go where I can when I can.
I do like to train at various different places though as you learn a lot more by rolling/sparring with different people, but I always feel like I'm offending the instructors when I do this.

Simon Hayes made a great post on this on the EFN forums. I'll try to find the thread and post a link now...

Great post; although I think being to closed may limit the potential standards in this country.

I am not trying to tell people how to train but in judo for example there are open sparring sessions at many clubs where its a case of more the better and then closed technical sessions; which as mentioned should only be for members of that team.

totally agree with that mate. I go to gym local to me (Treorchy) and train maybe once or twice a month there (either Wed evening or Sundays). There are a few Judo boys, Trad Jujitsu and MMA boys along with a few BJJ lads (Different clubs around south Wales too). Varying standards from BJJ blue belts, Jujitsu Blacks and browns, Judo Browns and some pretty high level MAA guys. It's really good, mostly just sparring and rolling and the odd discussion on technique. Only a quid each too!!

Think thats a great training mindset to mix it up with those guys during a rolling session. the more experience with the differant sytles of grapplers out ther, the better for ur own game. No doubt, it will b invaluable come competition time..

I find there are things I can do ok against BJJ boys to set up sweeps and stuff but can't get on the other styles (don't react the same). There are a few head squeezers there too so you need to be pretty sharpish digging for underhooks from half guard and sweeping or you end up getting your face or neck squashed. It benifits everyone really and everyone seems to take something from it. We all take the piss out of each other and the styles but thats part of the fun
