    This is what I think about pressure points;

    They cause varying levels of discomfort, depends on where you press and who you're doing them too.

    You need strong control over someone to effectively apply them.

    If you have that control, subs or strikes are much more effective.

    It's not the "Pressure point" it's usually the fact that someone is trying to dig their finger in between your ribs or something that hurts.

    Guy I used to train with had his finger pressing on the side of my neck when in my guard. he said "Is that doing anything"? Not a thing mate I said, what are you trying to do? Apparently someone told him that slight pressure in that exact spot would cause the blood to stop flowing in my cerotic artery and I'd feel very faint or pass out. Lets just say "Did it fuck"

    you need to ask if you think a "pressure point" is a mystical point that interrupts the flow of chi or a nerve ending that can cause a painful reaction when pressed?
    how you answer that question will change the answer on whether you think they work or not.

    Good pressure points;

    - drive your knee directly into your opponent's stomach/chest/ribs etc

    - drive your shoulder into your opponent's jaw

    Hi,

    3 pieces of information on pressure points.

    About 10 years ago Ali Wright (brother of Braulio student Dom Wright) went to a seminar with a noted PP instructor. Being a decent grappler, he figured that he would be able to hold people down and then do a few points on them. He came back for the seminar and pinned someone while he was rolling - no effect. So he got the instructor on the phone, while he was doing it and tried again - still no effect.

    I used to train with a silat guy called Jak Othman. At a seminar a guy asked him if he could demonstrate some pressure points. Jak asked him if he was sure and then dropped and hit the guy in the front of the quad with the point of his elbow. Jak explained that his understanding of PP amounted to hitting muscles really hurts!

    With regard to TCM. There are points that are prohibited from certain treatments - no needling, no moxa etc, but in order to use them in a theraputic setting, the patient has to lie still and the angle of access has to be correct. No easy thing then!

    My view - if it really worked then rugby players would be dropping like flies every time someone accidentally hit a point.

    My fave pressure point and BJJ video:

    Love the excuse. "They learn to translate this energy so they don't get affected by it as much" translates as "they don't believe it works so it doesn't".
