A very clever grappler , uses good gameplans for example Monson vs Braulio at the 10k ground clash....
i agree..i think he's great..a very smart guy..
looks for the takedown, passes and holds the position well..
altho not evryone cuppa tea im sure..
Boring but he wins. I think he goes with the intention of shutting down his opponent before thinking about his own attacks... that has won him major titles though, so can't really be argued with.

Being exciting is not necessarily the best way to win!
Look at Rumina Sato; in his day he either won by a cool flying attack, or lost to a Brazilian who ground out a victory. (Like in that old Canadian Ju Jitsu Championship from around 1996)![]()
In the 1970s several Australian Rugby League coaches went and spent a lot of time with the Green Bay Packers (NFL team). The main thing that they learned is the importance of not losing! So Australian teams focus on playing error-free football and controlling the ball - nowadays GB do well to win the odd match.![]()
Back to jiu jitsu (which is not even really a spectator sport- is it?) not losing is undoubtedly the best way to win.
So, control the game, prevent any attacks and grind out a boring points victory; rather than charging in and going for some big, cool, exciting technique - which the fans love - but may, or may not, be successful.
