    Default Working guard with gi

    Hi guys.

Ive been playing alot with guard as some of you know. Ive been wondering though, alot of BJJ players like to just grab onto your sleeves and hold on for dear life.

Well it happens to me alot.

Even happens when i have guys in my guard.

So whats the best way to get them to let go? To then progress to underhooks etc.

If your reading this levo, id appreciate your comments too mate.

Default ohhhhhhhh my first Techy reply

well in BJJ get used to people gripping cause thats the first thing people will do. A crap answer, but its reality.

First thing first, posture, never do anything unless you have your posture right. thats rule 1 in being in the guard.

it they have a sleave you can feed under their wrist and yank away, that should do it. You can sort of do that with the elbows.

Its quite unlikely a good player will let you both arms free so when you get an arm free start looking to pass.

Remember posture, he he i'm going to make that my signiture

i started gi work before i did non gi (just) so i am used to it. Its bloody annoying though. When im in their guard i have various ways to break it off, but it doesnt always work when im on my back.

Maybe i should learn some Akido wrist locks

Any tips on getting their hands clear to be able to sit up to get the underhook etc?

    Default well

well if they are holding your sleeve if there in you guard then the best way to get them to move is attack that arm. They won't want to hold on when they feel you work towards thats arm.

It sounds like you are forcing your game a little, "flow with the go"

Personally if this happens me, i hip escpae and go to spider guard, but that is my favoutie area of BJJ.

An alternate, is if they have both your sleaves is grab both his. Hip escpae to far guard (both feet on hips), push with your feet if he resists pull him onto you then push away lifting him in the air, superman style (do you know what i mean) if you can do go for an arm bar, if you want to play safe, roll over and sweep.

To get an underhook, so long as he isn't to lanky try holding one of his arms so it is low down your body. With the other punch your arm towards where your head is facing in a slight arc coming inwardards (this is at mat level) and bridge over the opposite shoulder a bit. That should free your arm if dependent on grip.

If this fails you may have brought his arm round his body. If you have trap it inbetween your bodies and then you have sweeps or attcck the neck or arm, even take the back, depending on size and the position you get sutck in

Godders if you are working your guard and they are holding your sleeves then it means they have nothing to post on so work a sweep or armbar.

Spider guard is a good option, also people will tired of this grip after a while so if you want to break it just keep trying. Two arms Vs one!

    Thanks alot Green

I dont think i could be accused of forcing it really. Im SOOO laid back when i grapple its not funny.

i never thought of going to spider guard, great idea. Ill tell you what, it gets a few eyebrows when i pull people into my guard.

Oh and wiegie dude.. Dont do a running commentry when im doing guard dude. U put me well off and the dude knew what was coming LMAO

Did you like my funky arse shaking? Shame i lost it in the end, got greedy with that last armbat attempt

If you have someone in your guard holding your sleeves just hold their Gi collar and go for a choke. Unless they are really strong it's hard to stop your arms unless they control the bicep.

A lot of times you need to sit back and watch and think things out. Loads of times I totally forget certain submissions I could try when in situations because my mind is stuck in one mode.
