Default Do you overuse your strength when you're sparring?

I haven't been doing BJJ for long and I'm not very good at it yet, but I have competed in regional powerlifting competitions in the past. Although that was some time ago and I'm certainly not as strong as I was back then, I'm still a bit of an ox strengthwise.

It's really hard for me not to use my strength to get out of submission attempts. I'm just doing it instinctively, but I fear that it may affect my long term progress.

Is it worth holding back, or just do what I need to do to get myself out of harms way?

What were your best numbers mate?

I used to compete in PL too.

Not sure about powering out of subs. Strength is an asset but strength and good technique is the money shot!

IMHO from a 'grappling' point of view..

Strength plus good technique = great

But theres abit more to 'grappling' than just these two area's..

Be sure to take time and learn the technique and learn to roll gently..

    ''Flow with the go''..per say..

Think of it this way... it doesn't matter if you get submitted in training, it does in competition.

How are you getting out of submission attempts? I've sparred with people who use strength alot and it just means they can go a bit slower when they roll.
