The reason its like that is quite simple.
If everyone had say 10k images. You get some poor 56k user, he reads a thread with 20 different people on it..
You can see the problem.
Also if they are too big it would screw up the layout of the forum. The difference is other forums will just resize the avatar to the size they request, but keep the filesize. Which is very nice and all, but it means you need to host the file and places like geocities wont allow you to view images outwit a website hosted on theirs
(thats why in ezboard etc you will see scrunched up crap as a avatar or just a x)
So we actually host the avatars ourselves (they get uploaded auto). So then you have bandwidth and space issues.

(i might be persuaded to bump it up a little though. If you can make a avatar thats low in size and not too big ill set the limits to that)
