Thread: Amateur fights with head shots?

Default Amateur fights with head shots?

I have been informed that the ISKA MMA rules for amateurs are 3x3 mins and allow Head shots while standing only.
In many MMA organisations, this generally means "semi pro".

Now i would like to know what everyone here feels about amateurs fighting MMA with head shots?

I think that this is unfair to other amature competitures. If some shows allow head shots and some show don't, then the guy's who are competing with headshots will be at an advantage when they step up to semi pro and people will believe, by there record, that they have not fought with head shots before.

Point taken. So basically what you are saying is that everyone should sing from the same hymn sheet?

Valid point. I erected this thread in order to get an understanding of what the MMA community thinks of it all.
Keep the debate going. I am genuinely interested in what people like yourselves think.

I like standing head shots in amateur as otherwise it just becomes bjj as striking become useless as everyone just drops their guard to only protect their bodies and you cant get a decent hit in. It doesn't represent MMA as it becomes a grappling contest as that is the only way to secure a win.
It doesn't prepare you at all for moving to semi-pro with headshots if you've never done it before and it breeds bad habits (like having a really low guard).
I personally would like head shots on ground as well (probably with more protective equipment, no elbows etc.) as grappling with strikes is a massively different experience from grappling without strikes.
I would like amateur fights to be almost identical to pro fights just with more safety equipment (shin guards, head guards, padded gloves?) so you are prepared and you dont spend your first year training for one thing, then something very different the next year and so on.

I think amateur fights should be same as pro except there are no elbows, heel hooks or neck cranks. Fighters wear sparring mma gloves and shins. I cannot see people wanting to fight wearing a head gaurd. With regards to fight time 2x 5 min rounds ?

Pretty much what the above poster said except I wouldn't use shins.
Amateur MMA should have headshots, standing and grounded imo. Use bigger gloves if need me and take out heel hooks/neck cranks.

No headshots at all is all well and good and a platform to start, but proper amateur MMA should be as I previously stated, I think.

    perhaps:
no elbows or knees to head
no heel hooks or neck cranks
    no running or diving slams
no shins guards or head guards
slightly more padded gloves (is that possible)
    2x 5min rounds

this sounds good and i would sure like to fight using these rules. why no heel hooks though? as far as more padded gloves the semi pro fighters at east coast fight factory's events use a sparring type glove which has more padding than a normal mma glove. 2x5 min rounds as opposed to 1 round sounds a lot better to me.

Sound a plan to me, wearing padded gloves? As in sparring gloves?
